DEADLINE DAY HANGOVER

New Spurs signing Sandro finally turns up at the Lane

Brazilian ball-winner appears, two weeks late

With everyone at Tottenham waiting with bated breath to see if Rafael van der Vaart‘s last-minute transfer will be ratified, the unveiling of another one of the club’s summer signings, Brazilian defensive midfielder Sandro, has slightly flown under the radar.

Harry Redknapp, however, will have been casting an especially beady eye over proceedings, after being particularly unimpressed that the 21-year-old missed his original arrival date… by a fortnight.

£8m Sandro was meant to join up with his new teammates once his Copa Liberatdores campaign with former club Internacional came to an end, which it did on August 18th when Inter were duly crowned champs and had a huge fight to celebrate.

With his new signing failing to report for duty later that week, on Sunday a rather miffed ‘Arry told The People:

Have we really signed him – or is he just a myth? I’ve never seen him here. He’s supposed to be here…but not today! I know he’s meeting up with the Brazil squad next week and train in Spain. I might have to go to Barcelona for three or four days to watch him – maybe I’ll take the wife!

Is that the first Sandra Redknapp reference of the season? Sandro will have managed to patch things up by saying all the right things in his first club interview yesterday – ‘The Premier League is the best in the world’, ‘Spurs are one of Europe’s biggest clubs’, so on and so forth:

Spurs are a team who are talked about a lot in Brazil. They are one of the biggest teams not only in England but also in Europe because of their history.

I watched every game last season when Spurs were going for fourth place, cheering them on and hoping they would qualify. When they finally did achieve qualification it was an absolutely fantastic moment.

The Premier League is the best league in the world. It is a strong league played at great pace and I think my style of play will adapt quickly to this kind of football.

So what do Spurs fans reckon – here does this leave previous enforcer Wilson Palacios? And what style of 1-8-1 formation is Harry going to have to play to fit in all these midfielders?

I’d pay for pitchside tickets to watch Harry and SAF train their troops. (I’d also make sure the batteries to my Flip vid. rec. were fully charged because you just KNOW you’re gonna get a ton of good YouTube footage.)
