Make money on tonight’s big Chelsea match

Big football news…

Big football

Bored of watching endless football matches without any kind of financial incentive? Looking for an extra thrill? Well, you just so happen to be in luck, sister. Allow our friends from Betfair Football to explain…

There aren’t many teams in Europe who could be without their top two goalscorers and head into a Champions League away game as overwhelming favourites, but that’s exactly the position Chelsea find themselves in.

Didier Drogba is out through suspension, while Frank Lampard has failed to recover from a hernia operation in time leaving them a bit light on firepower.

However, after their comfortable 3-1 win against West Ham at the weekend, it looks as though Chelsea have found a new goal machine to call upon – Michael Essien.

We told you in our lessons from the weekend feature on Monday that Essien looked incredibly good playing in a more advanced position, and we fancy him to show it against MSK Zilina tonight.

He seemed to relish the chance to get forward in support of Drogba at the Boleyn, and he will be expected to give the same support to Florent Malouda or Nicolas Anelka tonight. Backing Essien to get his third goal in a week when the market materialises could be well worth a punt.

The Blues are also without Ashley Cole who has stayed in England to rest, while John Terry has made the trip to Slovakia despite injuring a rib against the Irons. But whoever Chelsea play in defence should be more than good enough to cope with the Zilina attack

Chelsea have lost only three of their last 16 away games in the Champions League, and they were against Fernerbache, Roma and Inter Milan – a slightly better quality of opposition.

Backing the Chelsea win at 1.3 might not be the most tempting of bets, so add a little extra value by putting some cash on there to be over 2.5 goals at 1.75.

I have learnt never to bet on Chelsea away in Europe. I have been travelling with them for 6 seasons and have probably only seen 6 or 7 wins.

Sounds pretty hard to believe, Tim (not in Zilina tonight?). I go every so often but I managed to see 6 consecutive away wins in one season, plus a few more in later seasons – all in the last 6 or 7 seasons too. Can’t both be right (and I know I am right)
