SETTLE A DEBATE

Spurs’ Bassong accuses Samir Nasri of diving to win penalty in 4-1 Carling Cup rout

What do you reckon?

In the wake of Spurs’ misfits 4-1 mauling by Arsene Wenger’s ‘kids’ last night, Tottingham defender Sebastien Bassong has blubbed to press Samir Nasri dived to win a penalty seconds into the start of extra time:

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth because in extra time I thought we could have achieved something.

I did not touch him I did not grab him. I have seen the video and from my point of view it was not a penalty. I touched his chest but I did not grab him. He went down too easily.

Check it out in the clip above. Has Nasri gone down easily enough for it to be considered a ‘dive’? Or does Sebastien have no excuse for putting his hands on an attacker in the area?

OR, for those who saw the game, was it an attempt by referee Lee Probert to level things up after some extremely dodgy calls from the lino?

This video doesn’t show the close-up I saw during the game directly from the side. Bassong clearly grabbed his shirt and pulled. Really ridiculous move in the box. The little foot touch seemed incidental. I’m sure as soon as a player feels a shirt tug in the box the instinct kicks in. Jmho…

It was a soft challenge at worst. Players grab each others shirts both in and out of the box all the time. A little tug/jostle and he goes down faster than sack of potatoes.

It’s a fucking dive, he goes down because he realizes he won’t reach the ball, there’s always contact, if you have the chance to score you stay on your feet even with contact, simple as that.

He tugged on his shirt in the box almost immediately after a spot kick in which the man was free. Dive or not, Bassong is a fucking idiot. A little tug and pull is part of the game but so is the risk of having the ref call it fouling.

It was obviously a dive, but to be expected. Wenger’s “kids” had been flinging themselves to the floor at the slightest touch throughout the game.

Having sent Wenger to the stands before for kicking a water bottle Probert has since been accused of pro arsnal bias and trying to level things out.

He’s probably terrified of Wenger’s petulant, myopic whinging, and afraid that he might point a bony finger at him whilst screeching in a high pitched french accent about the injustice of life.

Look at the laws of the game. Shirt pulling is classed as foul play. Is it in the penalty area? Then it’s a penalty.

No amount of bleating about soft challenges or minimal contact will change the laws of the game.

And to do it twice in 5 minutes is, quite simply, idiotic.

Some of the guys here are really silly here…we were beaten 4-1 so you have to say that we were well beaten.

You touch a player inside the box, you know it’ll be given, the guy above was right…Bassong is an idiot.

I watched it on an arab channel and they showed it better: he pulled him and clipped him near the ankles.

is pulling a players shirt without even getting close to the ball a foul?

    yes.

does a foul in the penalty box result in a…surprise, penalty?

    yes.

so obviously, yes it’s a penalty even though it’s a soft foul. i don’t know why spurs fans are complaining, they only scored because of a terrible call by the linesmen.
