Craig Bellamy claims Manchester Utd tried to sign him before Cardiff move

Controversial Welshman considered a move across the city

Craig Bellamy has dropped a heavy hint (we’re talking a couple of kilotonnes heavy) that Manchester United tried to poach him from Man City during his protracted exit from the club this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur were widely rumored to be Bellamy’s destination of choice before his shock move to Cardiff, but speaking to BBC Five Live, the Welsh forward revealed he was also weighing up a third offer – from Fergie himself.

Claims Bellamy:

I believe the Tottenham thing came from higher up. I think there was a personal matter concerning the owner which meant that one wasn’t going to get done.

But someone else came in which would have caused a few stirs. If I had said I wanted to go there my life in Manchester would have been really tough. I ain’t gonna say anything but it would have been tough. It would have been a miracle had it come off.

Because of the other club being interested, City panicked and pushed the Cardiff thing through as quickly as possible.

If true, it raises a lot of interesting questions.

Had Utd got their man, would the Bebe transfer have gone through? Would Fergie have got shot of Owen? And, most importantly, did Bellamy make the right decision in turning them down?
