Liverpool agree sale to Boston Red Sox owner John W. Henry
The Reds poised to trade one set of Yanks for another
Liverpool have issued a statement this morning announcing they have accepted a bid for the club from New England Sports Ventures, the American owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, fronted by 61-year-old multimillionaire John W. Henry.
The board say they accepted the offer “on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV’s philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox.”
After trading the legendary Babe Ruth to rivals New York Yankees in 1918, the Boston Red Sox infamously went on an 86-year title-drought ‘curse’ until winning the World Series in 2004 – just two years after Henry’s arrival – and again in 2007.
NESV have built a reputation on an intelligent approach to squeezing revenue streams, allowing for extensive reinvestment in the Red Sox’ aging stadium Fenway Park over recent years, and comfortable management of the second highest payroll in Major League Baseball.
Henry himself is a self-made millionaire who allegedly dropped out of university to tour with rock and roll bands before going on to make his fortune in hedge fund management. He also has a fit wife.
Looks like the nightmare is finally drawing to a close for Liverpool fans.
