Kolo Toure joined Arsenal by scything down Arsene Wenger

Ivorian impresses staff by tipping over old man

The Times‘ chief football writer Patrick Barclay has got a new book out tomorrow, a biography of Sir Alex Ferguson excitingly entitled Bloody Hell! The biography of Sir Alex Ferguson.

In one chapter, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry recounts the story of how Kolo Toure won his contract at Arsenal.

Wistfully remembering the day Toure first rocked up at Arsenal’s training ground to be given the once over by coaching staff, TH14 claims the defender played his way into the club’s heart when he showed off some Karl Henry-style moves on Arsene Wenger himself:

Kolo took the ball, man, everything. The ball soared into the air and was falling just out of play when Arsene trotted after it and snaked out a leg to control it.

But Kolo was still running furiously and, as the boss trapped the ball, hit him as hard as he’d hit me. Arsene went head over heels. We all stopped and gaped. Then Arsene got up. He had this great big grin on his face. ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘I think we can go to war with this one.’ And Kolo joined us.

Oh realllly? We’ll have to remember this one next time Le Prof goes on a rant about heavy-handed tackling.

What does this have to do with Sir Alex?

    No idea.

Releasing that excerpt might be an ‘ingenious’ ploy to get people to buy the book and find out.

I think this excerpt is from a section of the book that has Thierry Henry comparing Wenger’s management style to that of Sir Alex’s.
