David James ‘joined Bristol City because he was drunk’

David James has revealed he only took Steve Coppell’s call to join Bristol City because he was still leathered after wedding celebrations the night before.

The eccentric shot-stopper takes up the tale:

I thought I would either stay with Portsmouth, move to a Premier League club or go to Scotland.

In between thinking about all that, there was my wedding to Amanda [the woman he left his wife for back in 2003 after meeting on Friends Reunited] to organise. Somehow it all converged at a single point, the morning after.

I received a phone call from an unknown number. I don’t usually answer those, but I was still drunk and so I picked it up.

Much to my astonishment the man on the other end was Steve Coppell. He said, ‘All right Dave, I’m the Bristol City manager, and was wondering if you’d be interested in having a look at the club?’

If it had been anyone else, I would not have considered it, but such was my respect for Steve that Bristol City became a serious contender.

Amanda and I discussed it and we liked the benefits of staying close to home with a shorter commute to work.

Next time Jamo, just Send to Voicemail and turn your phone off for a couple of days. David Nugent stylee.

This is typical of the press – the headline that he “joined Bristol because he was drunk” is malicious, misleading and unkind. Why does the press try to knock everyone down? This is one of our more thoughtful and erudite sportsmen. When you read James’ comments, we find that he took a call from an unknown number because he was still drunk. No one has suggested that he was drunk when he visited the club, or when he decided to sign. The press has much to answer for – this headline has already found its way into the Dubai sporting press this morning.
