Robbie Savage: ‘footballers are worth every penny’
Sav reckons £80,000 a week for John O’Shea is about right
Twitter-based wind-up merchant Robbie Savage is at it again, this time getting into a spat with fans over whether professional footballers deserve to be raking in such huge amounts of cash every week.
In news that will shock literally no-one, Sav sees player wages as just reward.
We get hammered a lot, so I’m on there giving a footballer’s viewpoint. The most common complaint is footballers earn too much. Nonsense. I defy anyone who gets offered it to say no, no matter what job you do.
We’re lucky to earn good money and we work hard for it. It is not our fault that we were good enough to play football and get handsomely paid for it.
I do work hard for it. The rewards are there if you do, so don’t tell me I haven’t worked hard for it. I would say every player I have played with has earned his money. Why is it always footballers who get criticised for the money they earn?
A top darts player can earn £1m a year. A cricketer £1m for two months, a golfer £7.4m for one tournament, a rubbish boxer £3m for one fight, a sprinter £400,000 for an appearance, a tennis player £800,000 for one week. But it’s always footballers who get criticised.
Thoughts? (Apart from “Savage is a c**t.”)

They generate vast amounts of revenue for their clubs, have to endure intense public scrutiny and have very short careers fraught with risk. Seen in that light their earnings don’t seem extreme. Compared with bankers, fat cats or dotcom entrepreneurs, footballers are cheap.

soldiers risk their lives, doctors save lives, footballers kick a fucking ball around for a few hours a week and earn more than either of the previous two in a year than they do in their whole lives. what about scientific researchers who spend their lives trying to discover ways to make our lives easier? a fraction of what these mental deficients make in a week.
fuck footballers and you idiots who encourage this kind of wage for sports people who contribute next to nothing to society

I don’t get how anyone can claim that professional athletes are overpaid. When you consider the amount of money their actions generate, they are actually underpaid.
If you want to talk about how screwed up our capitalist society is that values athletes over doctors and scientists, go ahead. But in our current system, it’s plain dollars and cents. Any “mental deficient” can figure that out.
