Matty Burrows’ goal nominated for FIFA Goal of the Year

Glorious backheel strike shortlisted for Puskas Award

As if over three million views on YouTube wasn’t enough, Glentoran striker Matty Burrows is to receive formal recognition for his sensational goal against Portadown last month by being nominated for FIFA’s new Goal of the Year trophy, the Puskas Award.

FIFA contacted the Irish FA yesterday to confirm the match-winning backheel was in the running and Burrows got the news last night in training.

He told BBC Radio Ulster:

The whole thing is unreal and it’s only just sinking in. I could maybe try to do that 100 times and it would only come off once – I just caught it perfectly.

It appears the winner will be voted for by the public via the FIFA website.

So get voting when all the nominees are up at the end of the month and we might be able to get Burrows’ name up alongside Cristano Ronaldo’s in the FIFA record books.
