Chelsea sack assistant manager Ray Wilkins at half-time
Blues icon booted midway through ressies match
Long-serving Chelsea man Uncle Fester Ray Wilkins was released from his position as assistant manager ‘with immediate effect’ yesterday – while he was in the middle of watching a reserve game against Bayern Munich.
Wilkins, who captained the Blues when he was just 18, left the dugout at half-time to have a meeting with Chelsea chief exec Ron Gourlay – and never returned. His name was immediately removed from the club website.
The 54-year-old’s departure is said to be part of cost-cutting exercise led by Chelsea bigwigs, who didn’t reckon Wilkins’ 350k p/a salary was value for money, especially as his main responsibilities – helping Italian gaffer Carlo Ancelotti bed in to the English game – have diminished over time.
It’s being reported today Carlo knew of Wilkins’ impending exit – and was even sitting alongside him when he was called away in yesterday’s reserve game.
Dashing Milanese legend Paolo Maldini is now front runner to take over Wilkins’ position, having already rejected an offer to be Ancelotti’s number two last year.
