Sven Goran Eriksson tried to sign David Beckham on loan for Leicester

Oh, that Sven!

Sven Goran-Eriksson and David Beckham

Sven Goran Eriksson, the biggest chancer in professional football sport, has today been regaling journos with news that he recently tried to sign DAVID BECKHAM HIMSELF on loan, for Leicester.

Unbelievably, Becks actually turned the Swede down, but that hasn’t stopped Svennis going on the hunt for other big name stars:

The owners want a big signing. Of course I would take Beckham. I spoke to his agent to see if there was a small chance but he said it wasn’t possible.

It’s difficult when you talk about players at that level. Most don’t really want to come to our league.

If we get to the Premier League it will be much easier to get these players. But we are trying and the owners are happy to back me.

Apparently he’s also been in the ear of Premier League forgotten men Roque Santa Cruz, who was never really ‘remembered’ in the first place, and Robbie Keane.

Incidentally, as is typical with Sven, while he’s entertaining the gentleman folk of the press with nonsense like this, his football team – who finished 5th last season – are mired the mediocrity of lower midtable.

Remember where Leicester were before Sven took over. True they finished fifth last season but that was under Nigel Pearson, Sven took over a side languishing in the relegation zone and his record is already head and shoulders above Paulo Sousa’s (even in these early days). Any credibility Sven had post-England has been drowned in his off-the-field antics, heading for wherever a note is flashed, but give credit where its due and don’t jump on the bandwagon – so far, his start at Leicester has been upbeat and encouraging. Perhaps there is a manager in there after all.

Does Sven know of any players who he hasn’t previously managed? Surely if Leicester have the cash to pay for some of Becks’ wages, they could afford to buy some of the talent that is on show in the lower leagues?

Granted I’m an outsider looking in but Sven always strikes me as being more of a schmoozer/politician than a bonafide, high quality manager.

Sometimes I think he is so far up Beckham’s arse that he needs scuba diving suit to breath.
