The greatest

Ryan Giggs is officially the greatest Man Utd player ever!

Saint Ryan Giggs

The Spoiler doesn’t need much of an excuse to bring out the ol’ Ryan Giggs YouTube clips, so imagine our delight when readers of Man Utd’s official magazine and website voted him their best player EVER!

His high placing perhaps has something to do with the average ManUtd.com user being too young to remember Eric Cantona let alone George Best. However, perhaps the biggest factor is fear – the canonisation of Giggs has reached such proportions that a friend of The Spoiler was beaten to death in the street last week simply for saying: “I heard he was a bit of a lad back in the day.”

He is good though, ain’t he? Anyway, the rest of the top ten is after the jump…

1. Ryan Giggs
2. Eric Cantona
3. George Best
4. Sir Bobby Charlton
5. Cristiano Ronaldo
6. Paul Scholes
7. David Beckham
8. Roy Keane
9. Peter Schmeichel
10. Wayne Rooney

What do you make of it all? The 1999 team seems well represented. Wayne Rooney at ten? Give us your opinion with pithy comment (you can even say something non-complimentary about Ryan Giggs – we won’t tell anyone).

As a Welshman, I’m not going to argue against the greatness of Giggsy.

In his prime the best footballer I’ve ever seen, one of the few players to have had that spark of genius to light up a dull game with brilliance and create something of beauty out of nothing.

I have seen faster (Walcott), players with more tricks (Ronaldo), more strength (Drogba), and more natural talent (Messi) but as a complete player who has been at the very top of the world game for so long he is without equal.

This top 10 makes no sense as it is not a team that can be fielded. Here is my Man Utd greatest starting 11 (1992 onwards)

    Goal-keeper: Schmeichel
Defenders: G. Neville, Stam, Vidic, Evra Midfield: Keane, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs
    Strikers: Cantona, Rooney

Subs: Van De Sar, Ferdinand, Pallister, Irwin, Ince, Beckham, Andy Cole, Van Nistelrooy, Solskjaer

God u are one spastic mark, no best, no law no Duncan Edwards, you truly know nothing about football, please do us all a favor and never speak about a greatest Manchester Utd starting 11 again when u obviously know nothing about the matter

Giggs lasted the longest but that hardly makes him the best. Even during his own career at United he was never the best player in any United team he played in. Rooney is better now as was Ronaldo. Keane and Scholes from 99 were more important to the team. Cantona from the 1994 team.

Giggs has been an amazing servant but lasting the longest doesn’t mean he was ever the best. He wasn’t.
