Five players who should give this season’s money back
Gerrard – not quite on the list
The Super Bowl was good last night, wasn’t it? All that stopping and starting and stuff – it was great. Anyway, after we’d finished supping our Bud and polishing off our chips and dip, The Spoiler got to thinking about another American sport – baseball.
More specifically, we got to thinking about the chaps who play Extreme Cricket. More specifically still, we thought about a player called Gil Meche who quit the Kansas City Royals with a season left on his contract – 12 months that would have been worth $12 million – because he no longer thinks he’s up to the job.
It follows on from Juan Roman Riquelme, who gave half of his salary from 2010 back to Boca Juniors because he was out injured. Anyway, after the jump you’ll find some players who The Spoiler thinks should feel obliged to give something back…
Whether you’re a lover or a hater, there can be no denying that Rooney has not justified his massively improved contract this season. He had a strop, got a £150,000 – £250,000-a-week contract (depending on what paper you read) and proceeded to play like a tit. He’s played alright recently, but he failed to show up at Wolves on Saturday although, in fairness, no other United player did either.
You know that bit in The Simpsons when Homer says: “Every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain”? Well Andrei Arshavin must have learnt some mind blowing stuff over the summer because he’s definitely forgotten how to play football.
The Spoiler has a friend (really) who is an Arsenal season ticket holder. He swears blind he’s never seen him run more than three times during a game and, as all English football fans know, you’ve got to run around loads to be a good player. Come on, Andrei!
He should keep a little bit back for himself though – somehow he’s got quite a lot of assists, despite giving more effort to the Russian World Cup bid than to Arsenal.
Remember him? England’s would-be saviour in the World Cup? If only know-nothing Fabio Capello had given him a spell in the team, Cole would have unlocked the tightest of defences with a brilliance seen all too rarely in an England shirt.
After being shamefully overlooked by Capello, he moved to Liverpool, got sent-off on his debut, missed a penalty against Trabzonspor and… well, not much else.
He’s somehow made a free transfer look like a waste of money.
There could be a host of Manchester City players in this list but, with The Spoiler being so tough, we’ve decided to pick on the smallest one. He’s made a handful of appearances for City and done very little in any of them. He’s even failed to make the latest England squad, despite Capello’s previously unshakable belief that he’s more than a very, very average player.
He’s only made six appearances for Newcastle this season and has hardly covered himself in glory during those half-a-dozen games. He’s the only player apart from Ryan Giggs to have played in every Premier League season and, to be perfectly honest, it’s starting to show.
We’re wrong aren’t we? Slap us down and suggest some alternatives below…
