A tribute

The Real Ronaldo decides to call it a day

You will be missed, Sir

The Spoiler was just a whipper-snapper when Ronaldo first came to our attention and he absolutely blew our tiny little mind. He was unbelievably strong, quick and skilful – he’s what Jonah Lomu could’ve been if he’d not lived in New Zealand and made the right life choices.

Today he announced his retirement from football by saying:

“The head wants to go on but the body can’t take any more. I think of an action but I can’t do it the way I want to. It’s time to go.”

It’s a rather muted end for the three-times world player of the year but he will always be remembered as one of the greats.

It’s easy to reduce a player’s career down to statistics – especially if they happen to be a striker – but in Ronaldo’s case it’s probably more inappropriate than most.

Yes, he’s the top goal-scorer in World Cup history, scored a hat-tick at Old Trafford and scored X goals in X games BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. But it’s the way he went about it that was truly bloody fantastic.

He could go around players, go through players and was as good a finisher as you’d care to see. But he also played with a smile on his face and he still seems to thoroughly enjoy his life – we’d definitely send him a Valentine’s card.

Ronaldo, you can enjoy your life of yachts and models safe in the knowledge you were one of the greats.

Below is a video of our favourite Ronaldo moments. The first one is after 30ish seconds and the second one immediately follows – two goals that summed up the early part of his career. He bloody destroys them.

What are your favourite moments? Let us know with a little comment below…

Greatest I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. I’ll be able to tell my kids I saw him play.

one of the best never to play in the premiership who could have?

the real ronaldo? are you baboons as stupid as the rest of these dimwits who call cristiano the fake ronaldo? cristiano is the best premier league player ever and the only player from it to ever win WORLD player of the year. 2 different types of players and if you pay attention during fifa 11 games you would hear martin tyler and andy gray say how this ronaldo is better than the brazilian ronaldo.

and if you pay attention during fifa 11 games you would hear martin tyler and andy gray say how this ronaldo is better than the brazilian ronaldo.

Yes. Because Andy Gray’s been absolutely spot on for everything in the past. Including women not leaving the kitchen.

Cristiano is one of the best in the world. But you’re on it if you think he even comes close to what the REAL Ronaldo has done. He was the epitome of a big-game player in club and for country. He scored bags of goals wherever he went, despite suffering career-ending injuries, and he did it all without whinging to refs and alienating all his teammates.

then why has cristiano already broken a real madrid record for goals in 50 games that the brazilian ronaldo could never even touch. face it cristiano is a winger who will score more goals than the brazilian striker ronaldo at real madrid. Ronaldo had ronaldinho, roberto carlos, juninho, rivaldo all as backup on brazil while cristiano has no one of that caliber for portugal. i hope jose mourinho becomes the portugal coach sooner just to help cristiano win a wc and euro to shut up the lot of you. By the way i’m english too so don’t put no bias bs in it.

If you paid attention to history you’d know that the real Ronaldo scored 47 goals in just 49 games in on season at the tender age of 20 for Barcelona. By the time he returned to Spain with Real Madrid he’d already had two knee surgeries, injuries that have ended the careers of lesser men. Even without the physical tools he had earlier in his career he scored 83 goals in 127 league games.

I guarantee you if you took Cristiano’s pace away from him he wouldn’t score more than 10-15 goals in a season, winger or no. The winger argument is also a moot point as he’s been given freedom for years to drift around the pitch into whatever space he wants as well as featuring as a striker in plenty of matches.

so your saying that ronaldo couldnt do more goals is because he got injured , injurys that where do to his lack of fitness so basically all his fault. while cristiano is health crazy where he doesnt even drink alcohol ever, fat brazilian ronaldo gets flat drunk to the point where he did it with a bunch of trannies

“injurys that where do to his lack of fitness so basically all his fault”

Dude, he has a condition. Really do your damn research before spitting sht out. He’s got the metabolism of a 50 year old.

Really, you who say Cristiano Ronaldo has anything on Ronaldo simply did not see him play. It’s a different league, even for Messi himself.

Cunt-iano is a top-top athlete. World class player. His drive could make him succeed in any sport he´d like.
Ronaldo on the other hand is a blessed football genius, like Messi is now for instance.
Anyone who thinks Cristiano is better than Ronaldo was before the injuries is either an idiot, blind or a fanboy.
    No comparison what so ever…

    C. Ronaldo is a great player, but Ronaldo was a force of nature.

How dare you idiots compare CR7 and R9, yes maybe CR7 is fitter and thats maybe because he dives before he is tackled by other players. R9 was a star act, carried and scored goals for any team he played for. And if his injuries sound like an excuse lets pray that C Ronaldo or Messi get injured for atleast 8 months and see how they recover from that and note that I didnt say 2years like Ronaldo had to endure.
