excellent interview

Joey Barton doesn’t rate Lampard or Gerrard and totally hates Gareth Barry

Return of the Barton…

Football and everything that goes with it has been pretty good during the past few weeks. Wayne Rooney continues to cause trouble, The Champions League is hotting up (despite three of the four semi-finalists already being confirmed), the Premier League is nearing conclusion and – in case you missed it – ASHLEY COLE SHOT SOMEONE.

But there’s been this nagging feeling nagging away like a naggy thing in the back of The Spoiler’s head – something’s been missing. What it is, we don’t know.

Wait. Joey Barton’s given a new interview to a French football magazine? Ahh…

Anyway, here’s what Joey has to say to So Foot about his favourite topics – England and English midfielders that aren’t him. Enjoy.

On England…

“France killed us at Wembley. We English will play the next 50 World Cups and we’ll never win one. The people in charge at the FA played football maybe 50 or 60 years ago and still think that we can win a World Cup in the same way we did in 1966.

“We’re too focused on tradition in England, like always having to play 4-4-2. Sometimes you need to experiment, drop a bit deeper so you have more space to move into. France, Italy and Germany have done it. We’ve been doing the same thing for 20 years.”

On English midfielders…

“Honestly, I think I’m the best English midfielder. Luka Modric and Samir Nasri are very good, but in terms of English players … Well, Jack Wilshere isn’t bad, but Frank Lampard’s on the way down and Steven Gerrard’s been injured a lot.”

On Gareth Barry…

“Did you see the game against Germany at the World Cup? If you watch the fourth goal, when Ozil was up against Barry, it was like the hare and the tortoise.

“Barry’s got a very good agent. He’s also discreet and always agrees with the manager. He’s like the guy who sits in the front row and listens to the teacher. I certainly don’t lose any sleep when I play against him.”

So, what do you think of it all? Let us know with a cheeky comment below…

I’m not Barton’s biggest fan, but he does have a point, except about himself being the best English midfielder, but everything else he really has a point

Couldn’t agree more about the England set-up. It’s been too rigid for too long. Fabio changes to a 4-3-3 and things seem to look much better. People, including the press, couldn’t seem to believe it. Yet many were calling for changes for a long time.

On him being the best English midfielder? I’d rank a few ahead of him–Jack Wilshere being one.

I don’t really agree with any of what he said other than, ‘England won’t win a world cup even in the next 50 years’. Now Barton is a good midfielder. But he’s only a good midfielder FOR NEWCASTLE because he fits in with the remainder of the, ‘not so good team’. All in all I think he’s a grade A tit.

What he said about Lampard and Barry is right on the money. Hilarious as well, especially the Barry comments. Never rated that guy.

I’m a born and bred Geordie, and to be honest Joey has been in exceptional form this season. I can believe he hasn’t been called up, because its the same old s**t with English football. Pick the bigget names from the biggest teams, thats why everyone seemed to be dumbfounded when Matt Jarvis got a call up. Newcastle players always get overlooked, Nolan at the minute is the 4th top scorer in the league 12 league games, 12 goals, and he will not get picked, because we are too far north. Ridiculous.
and ROSS, Newcastle are one of the better teams in the Premier league, just been promoted, spent roughly 10 million on being promoted, Ben Arfa (£6mil) Tiote (£4mil), Dan Gosling(free) Sol Campbell(free) and James Perch(hopefully free) included yet we are currently 9th and have had some fantastic results, 6-0, 5-0, 4-4 at arsenal, 5-1 mackems, and 3-1 and l’pool, we also have 2nd best goal difference 7th-20th.
