Another commenter, in another blogosphere, somewhere in the worldwideinterwebtwitterverse, compared football “performers” to Hollywood “performers”. I thought it was a fair comparison.

Melissa Leo drops the F bomb during the Oscars–and nobody was screaming that she be banned from performing.

If fans hurled filth and abuse at actors on stage (arguing that it’s their right because they paid for a ticket), the production would be shut down.

If the FA want to enforce the Respect Code…then it should be applied uniformly across the board. All fans should be fined/banned for swearing. All managers should be fined/banned for swearing. All players should be fined/banned for swearing. And…we need to fine/ban members of the FA for swearing at the workplace too. I want webcams installed in all FA offices and boardrooms during the workday so I can police their speech.

I kind of agree with him, because the issue is not what Rooney said. It’s the whole glorification of aggression thing. I have no doubt that some people thought Rooney’s attitude wasn’t idiotic, but badass. You need to show that aggression will have consequences. In that sense, his comments are a bit heavy-handed, but not unreasonable.

Putting the idea of this “broken britain” aside, this police officer does have a point. People go out for a night out all the time and everywhere you go there will always be a few idiots that go crazy “in the heat of the moment” or just being pissed and do exactly like Rooney did. If one of these idiots went up to and started effing and blinding at you would you go back and say “well done mate, well done, it’s okay just keep doing it”. By making an example out of Rooney needs to show that it’s not okay to go effing and blinding at everything or everyone. Especially when you have previous like Rooney.

My main concern with that vitriolic outburst is how someone who does not understand the basic rules of grammar, particularly the circumstances in which it is approporate to use an apostrophe, can become a superintendent.

At least Rooney’s press officer proof-read his tweet before it was posted.

And that, kids, sums up the difference between the public and private sectors.

As an adult with no kids, I completely agree. However, a youngster with a Rooney kit might be more impressionable than I.

Rooney-gate is a bit much, although a person in his standing should me more self-aware. If you don’t want to be a role model, don’t be a shill in a thousand commercials each year.
