The PFA Fans’ Player of the Year is… Raul Meireles. Really? REALLY.
There’s a bit in our favourite film – Men in Black – when Tommy Lee Jones’ grizzly old agent is talking to Will Smith’s rogue, rule-breaking, but-goddamit-he-gets-results guy and says this:
“A person is smart; people are dumb panicky dangerous animals and you know it.”
Ignoring the ‘panicky dangerous animals and you know it’ bit, The Spoiler was reminded of this quote when we heard that Raul Meireles had won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award…
Actually, the movie quote we were properly reminded of was from that really good film with that guy with the hair, when he says:
Now, Mr Meireles has been pretty good this season but PFA Fans’ Player of the Year? It’s not as if the award has a habit of being well maverick – it’s previously been won by Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry (amongst others).
But, yea, he’s won it. Fair and square apparently. We’re still not sure if it’s right. The Spoiler would like to insert a caveat here and say that if it’s a joke, we’re sorry and we should have realised. Anyway, apparently King Kenny, who is ONE HUNDRED PER CENT RESPONSIBLE for Meireles being half-tidy, had this to say:
“Raul has always had the ability he has shown recently.
“Maybe he’s settled down a little bit and is more comfortable and confident because he is playing well but there’s been nothing drastic for any of the players really.
“It is fantastic to see Raul doing so well. He has always been a talented footballer, he’s always had what we are seeing now but it’s been trying to get it out and it is coming out now and he’s scoring goals.”
Apparently, Fernando Torres was also in the hunt for the award. Although that is definitely a joke.
