The PFA Fans’ Player of the Year is… Raul Meireles. Really? REALLY.

There’s a bit in our favourite film – Men in Black – when Tommy Lee Jones’ grizzly old agent is talking to Will Smith’s rogue, rule-breaking, but-goddamit-he-gets-results guy and says this:

“A person is smart; people are dumb panicky dangerous animals and you know it.”

Ignoring the ‘panicky dangerous animals and you know it’ bit, The Spoiler was reminded of this quote when we heard that Raul Meireles had won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award…

Actually, the movie quote we were properly reminded of was from that really good film with that guy with the hair, when he says:

“Wow… Really?”

Now, Mr Meireles has been pretty good this season but PFA Fans’ Player of the Year? It’s not as if the award has a habit of being well maverick – it’s previously been won by Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry (amongst others).

But, yea, he’s won it. Fair and square apparently. We’re still not sure if it’s right. The Spoiler would like to insert a caveat here and say that if it’s a joke, we’re sorry and we should have realised. Anyway, apparently King Kenny, who is ONE HUNDRED PER CENT RESPONSIBLE for Meireles being half-tidy, had this to say:

“Raul has always had the ability he has shown recently.

“Maybe he’s settled down a little bit and is more comfortable and confident because he is playing well but there’s been nothing drastic for any of the players really.

“It is fantastic to see Raul doing so well. He has always been a talented footballer, he’s always had what we are seeing now but it’s been trying to get it out and it is coming out now and he’s scoring goals.”

Apparently, Fernando Torres was also in the hunt for the award. Although that is definitely a joke.

I saw a poll on a Liverpool site the other day (being a Liverpool fan) and Meireles wasn’t even top for player of the season there- Lucas was and what is more I agree with that poll.

Meireles has been good but because of injuries etc. he has had to play on the wings too often to play to his full potential.

I should note that this likely stems in part from the fact that there simply hasn’t been an outstanding candidate this year (in the way that those previously mentioned were).

surely the likes of Etherington/Modric/Parker/Odemwingie/Adam have all had better seasons to name but a few!

I can only presume you don’t follow football much, mate. ‘Cause if you did, you would understand just how world class Meireles has been this year.

    Not surprised.

He was dreadfully poor before picking up a decent run of form

He was Fans’ Player of the Month in February (after he’d been on that run scoring loads) so I’m guessing that that’s got something to do with it. Maybe they added all those votes to a final vote or something.

Very good player, excellent signing for Liverpool, but probably third choice for their player of the year after Lucas and Kuyt.

There was a campaign by some liverpool forums. I don’t know how they managed to find time to vote 50 times each, what with all the letters to the New York Times about matchfixing in the league to write.

If Liverpool fans had the opportunity to vote 50 times why don’t you vote for the player you wanted 5,000,000 times. Raul played well in the wake of 2011 and wasn’t chosen by Liverpool FC, instead by real Football Fans.

    Because I couldn’t care less

And because of this same apathy you decided to do some digging and find out about the voting plan as well?
