Is it time for this popular figure to return to the Premier League?
A fair few Aston Villa fans never took to Gerard Houllier as their manager, and most neutrals weren’t too impressed by his appointment, but undoubtedly what transpired was an awful way for his tenure to end that nobody would have wished for.
The Frenchman stepped down on Wednesday night – or more accurately appeared to be forced to – after a major health scare. Given his admirable love of all things football, an eventual comeback in some role appears inevitable, but hopefully will only take place if he receives full medical clearance.
Anyway, enough of the sad stuff, the positive is that we have another Premier League vacancy open, meaning fresh opportunities for baseless speculation at a time when there isn’t much else to talk about. Yippee!
A glance at the tabloids and latest odds on offer show what The Spoiler considers to be the strongest pool of candidates for a job at a mid-table club in quite some time.
It’s certainly a far more enticing one than the one that confronted Villa last August, even if the links to the likes of Champions League winners Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez ultimately prove fanciful.
