A SETTLED SQUAD

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce knows exactly what he wants

Please, no more new players Niall…

Steve Bruce

So as mentioned in our John O’Shea story, Sunderland are making sound progress in their attempts to sign the Irish defender, Wes Brown and Darron Gibson, while Sky Sports claim that Blackpool midfielder David Vaughan will be on his way too.

If those deals are completed, that quartet will join Keiren Westwood, Sebastian Larsson, Craig Gardner, Ji Dong-Won and Connor Wickham as prominent arrivals on Wearside this summer.

Black Cats fans can be forgiven for feeling fairly surprised by the developments, given that Steve Bruce was quoted as saying last December, in the aftermath of another fairly hectic pre-season spending spree that…

“We can’t just keep going to the owner and asking him to keep providing and providing and providing. I am quite happy – and I genuinely mean this – to work with the squad we have got.

“Of course, I am always on the look-out for something that can make us better, but there has to come a point – and we have maybe got to that point – where we just work with the squad we have got.

“We have got an excellent squad of players who have only been here a short period of time, and we will get on with what we have got.”

Glad that’s all cleared up then…

    Yes but!,
Sunderland lost Darren Bent, Jordon Henderson and the sortie into the South American did not really work, with the thinness of the squad we had a torrid time during the spring, Bruce also stated at the end of the season that he needed 7 or 8 players to beef up the squad. He is now well on the way with that goal, all we need is another additional striker when he has finished with this round of purchases.

Agreed Richard…that was the problem last season for the Black Cats. They ran out of players due to injury and selling off in Jan.
