Beckham scores from a corner, England lose rare shootout!
Three videos from an unexpectedly lively weekend of football
The lack of major European club football hasn’t halted the entertaining YouTube video output whatsoever, with the likes of David Beckham, Dani Alves and the England women’s football team nobly contributing to the cause.
Given that it was a Beckham-dominated weekend, in which he also set up Landon Donovan deliciously and celebrated the birth of fourth child Harper Seven, his goal direct from a corner seems the obvious place to start.
For all the (largely unwarranted) abuse that the MLS gets, their decision to have their own YouTube channel, thus saving bloggers worldwide the pain of searching for fresh links every time a video gets taken down, gets a huge thumbs-up from The Spoiler.
Best corner strike of 2011? Most comical defending of a corner of the year perhaps but this valiant effort can’t quite compare to the ingenuity of Beckham’s buddy Roberto Carlos back in January.
But while defending like that is perhaps to be expected by a side struggling towards the bottom of the MLS’s Eastern Conference, it isn’t quite as acceptable for a Barcelona and Brazil defender to be shown up, especially not one valued at around the £30 million mark.
Yet Dani Alves was embarrassed this weekend against Paraguay as Brazil again failed to win at the Copa America. His disastrous attempt at shepherding the ball out and the hilarious way that the ball ended up in the net even outshone Roque Santa Cruz actually scoring as the highlight of the match.
So having had an unusual goal and a comedy goal, our video review of the weekend signs off on the tragedy of another England loss on penalties, this time suffered by the women’s team against France and made even more painful by the fact the Three Lionesses led in both the match and the shootout.
If you want to skip to the bit where it all goes wrong then head to 4.55, as England bid to stay in front with their penultimate kick. Those watching the whole thing though should look out for how goalkeeper Karen Bardsley goes from catching the first penalty to failing to even dive for most of the rest!
