Will this man proudly be crowned the nation’s new Gary Lineker?
Paddy Power fancy Jake Humphrey to host Match of the Day
The Spoiler isn’t aware of any major talk of Gary Lineker quitting his Match of the Day gig, though to our shame we haven’t watched as religiously as is deemed right at this time of year, but that hasn’t stopped Paddy Power speculating over his successor.
They reckon that Formula One presenter Jake Humphrey, whose career prospects took a blow when the BBC carelessly misplaced the rights to half of next season’s races in Sky’s lap, is the next in line for the throne at 5/1.
The current B show gang Colin Murray (MOTD2) and Manish Bhasin (Football League Show) are both considered fairly unlikely to make the step up at 10/1 and 12/1, however it is fellow BBC employees who are rated Humphrey’s main competition.
Football Focus host Dan Walker, who was given a bus to ride around South Africa in at the last World Cup as his higher-paid colleagues lounged around in a Cape Town studio nowhere near most of the action, perhaps as a test of staying power, is 6/1, as is occasional Lineker stand-in Gabby Logan.
Also towards the front are ITV anchor Adrian Chiles, who seemingly conceded defeat in his candidature by jumping ship, and Michael Owen (surely not THE Michael Owen?) at 8/1.
The people’s choice James Richardson is in Manish territory at 12/1 and the bantersaurus Richard Keys is 20/1, while aside for Gabby, it is 25/1 that the BBC’s sports department attempt to bat aside recent allegations of sexism by hiring either Georgie Thompson or Charlotte Jackson.
