Massive Champions League news

Benfica stand between Chelsea and the right to lose to Barcelona

APOEL's chances of Champions League glory also suffer a blow

While you’ve been screaming at horses on television, over in Switzerland, that loveable bald bloke has been perfecting the art of time wasting.

In between those eagerly-anticipated video montages, he did manage to oversee the Champions League draw, and miraculously, kept Real Madrid and Barcelona apart. Not just in the quarter-final, but in the semis too.

As if they don’t brawl enough, the Spanish pair are 5/4 with Bwin to be kicking lumps out of each other at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena in May. Rumour has it everyone’s favourite hacker Sergio Ramos is particularly excited at the prospect.

For the sake of completeness, Real Madrid got Cypriot giants APOEL Nicosia, while Barcelona face Milan, and get to show up Arsenal without even playing them. Fancy that.

In even more thrilling news, Chelsea might yet have the opportunity to experience more heartache at the hands of Barcelona. There’s the small of matter of negotiating a tie with Benfica first, but you’d be a cruel man to deny Roberto Di Matteo another chance to run on the pitch and assault Fernando Torres.

Chelsea are 11/8 with Sky Bet to see off Benfica and then crash and burn against Pep Guardiola’s men in the last four. And the romantic in us just can’t ignore the tantalising possibility of Jose Mourinho’s Real meeting his formerly special Chelsea in the final. It won’t happen, but it’s worth taking some time out of your day to contemplate.

We’d love to tell you about the Europa League as well, but thanks to our beloved Manchester clubs, it’s now just a muddle of Spanish teams with names that we struggle to pronounce. Hard lines.

hmmm i think “the right to lose to barcelona” is a little unfair. any football fan will tell you that no team is unbeatable and with the right tactics maybe even luck. chelsea may cause an upset.
