Dave Whelan’s stint as a Sky Sports News correspondent ends
"Can’t you drag this decision out a bit longer lad?"
Roberto Martinez has confirmed that he will be spending next season with Wigan. Or to be more accurate, Dave Whelan has confirmed that Martinez has confirmed…
In keeping with a fortnight in which Whelan’s publicity-hungry, discretion-famished approach – filing twice-daily updates on any conversations that his manager may or may not have held to everyone’s favourite 24-hour sports news channel – was no doubt of great embarrassment to both the Spaniard and Liverpool, Whelan decided that it was his duty to have the final say on the saga.
And like any good wannabe journalist, he was aware of the necessity to spice up the quotes a touch, which he did courtesy of an Aston Villa snipe every bit as unsubtle as a Mark van Bommel challenge.
He said: “Villa are a fantastic club with great fans, but I never thought they were big enough for him. I’ve said all along that I never thought he would end up there, and, fortunately for us, that’s how it has turned out.”
But will Martinez ultimately regret his decision to stay – if indeed it was a decision and not a situation forced on him as Liverpool, Villa and all other suitors grew tired of hearing their every word repeated hours later on Sky Sports News?
When he decided to stick it out last summer, he spoke of challenging for the top half, an ambition never fulfilled and with several players leaving and requiring replacing, it won’t be a shock if another relegation battle beckons, before perhaps yet another approach from Villa next May.
EDIT: With Wigan assistant Graeme Jones the favourite for the Swansea job, it looks like Whelan might have cause to keep SSN on speed dial after all
