In 2001, hunky* Romanian striker and former recreational drug enthusiast Adrian Mutu married Romanian TV presenter, actress and model Alexandra Dinu. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, as the pair split up two years later, with Alexandra being rewarded custody of their son Mario.

Meet the lady who may have tamed Pippo

Filippo Inzaghi has enjoyed more than his fair share of beautiful Italian women, yet his wayward steamrollering ways may have been brought to an end by showgirl and TV presenter Alessia Ventura. The 28-year-old lovely is engaged to the Italian sex connoisseur, who says she “ticks all the boxes in what I’d like my partner to be as a person”. Presumably, those boxes are ‘Attractive’ and ‘Willing to get her kit off at any given moment’.

Italy continues to shine as the WAG capital of the world

It seems that certain Italian television shows are a hotbed of WAG activity. Variety show Striscia la Notizia (‘Strip the News’) has given the world Elena Barolo, Melissa Satta and Giorgia Palmas, while Carabinieri (which seems to be the Italian version of The Bill) gave us the stupendously good looking Martina Colombari. Today’s WAG, Elisabetta Canalis is held in particularly high esteem, as she has had the honour of starring in both shows.

She has been romantically linked with Christian Vieri (who has also steamrollered Satta and Elena Santarelli), Didier Drogba and most recently Parma’s Brazilian striker Reginaldo.

Further proof that Italian footballers have a ‘type’

Although not quite at Iain Dowie’s level, AC Milan’s former centre-back Alessandro Costacurta is about as ‘homely’ as an Italian gentleman can get. Despite this aesthetic impediment, the 42-year-old (who only retired last year) has managed to land Martina Colombari as a wife. Like every other Italian WAG out there, she is a Miss Italy winner (1991) who is partial to removing her clothes in front of the lens…

Due to a trend started by good ol’ George Best in the sixties, the most popular occupation of your typical WAG of the Day appears to be ‘beauty queen’: Miss Italy 2003 Francesca Chillemi joins Aída Yéspica, Vincenza Cacace, Elisabetta Gregoraci and Giorgia Palmas in the realm of competitive goodlookingness. Francesca’s efforts have been rewarded not only with a crown and scepter, but also the affections of Cagliari Calcio’s Vincenzo Marruocco and more recently Roma’s sass-mouthed midfielder Alberto Aquilani.
