City looking to replace German midfielder in transfer window
When a player reaches the end of his playing career, the club that owns him usually opts for a gentle approach. Some players will be granted a testimonial. Others will be trotted out for occasional five-minute cameos to allow them to say good-bye to the fans properly. A particularly loyal servant may even be given a coaching job or an ambassadorial role at the club. But not at Man City.
Oh no, because when Thaksin Shinawatra has had enough of a player, he doesn’t put a friendly arm around his shoulder and explain that his valued service is no longer required, he goes public:
“Dietmar Hamann is getting old. We’re looking at a new midfielder who we think will play very well with Elano. We’re going to play in a classic style.”
That’s how the Thai supremo told a Hong Kong newspaper about his plans for the January transfer window, thereby informing his German star in no uncertain terms that he’s a) too old, b) not up to the job of partnering Elano and c) not stylish enough. Nice work Thaksin. This ‘morale’ malarkey is over-rated anyway.
Ever been unceremoniously sacked by the former Prime Minister of Thailand? Leave us a comment to let us know.
