Is falling asleep at the wheel on a motorway while hammered really such a bad thing?
After a long day of post-Christmas drinking back in December, Derby midfielder Bob Malcolm (currently on loan from QPR) was all tuckered out on a long drive back up north. So, he did what any right-thinking person would do, and switched off his Range Rover’s engine in the middle of the M1, in order to catch forty winks.
At the Magistrates hearing, which ended yesterday, the Scottish international claimed he was ‘overtaken by tiredness’, and was under the impression he had pulled over to the hard shoulder for a kip. After it was revealed he was twice the legal limit, he also cited QPR’s Boxing Day loss to Plymouth as the reason for his poor decision making skills.
For his troubles, Malcolm received a twenty month driving ban and a whopping £750 fine. Personally, I can’t believe they threw the book at him like that - losing a football game is an absolutely watertight defence for causing a fatal obstruction on a major highway. He must’ve had a cheap lawyer or something.
