Following last night’s sub-Carling Cup final performance, Spurs have a mighty task ahead of them in Amsterdam next week. Meanwhile, Gary Megson has admitted he will be fielding a reserve side at Sporting Lisbon, so that the first teamers may concentrate on clearing a space in the relegation zone for Newcastle. Which leaves Everton, who must overcome a two-goal deficit to a Fiorentina side that out-classed them, but next week’s home tie could be fruitful.

Unsurprisingly, the odds have lengthened considerably on an English side taking the trophy, but a 16/1 on Everton to go all the way, for example, might just be worth a few quid.
