Captain’s annual custom becomes yearly tradition
The eagle-eyed news monkeys at Football365 have noticed that Steven Gerrard tends to impart similar sounding words of encouragement on a yearly basis, yet they have thus far failed to help his side bring home the domestic title.
But could his expectation-raising comments spur the Reds to trouble the top of the table this year? Is Rafa’s head shaped a bit like an old fashioned kettle? Do I look good in pastel colours because they bring out my eyes? So many questions, so little time…
“Most of the lads in this squad have won every trophy except the Premier League so that is the aim this year. If not, improve again and do it next year, but we feel a title challenge is around the corner…”
Steven Gerrard, December 26, 2005“I’ve liked the way we’ve done business this summer. I’m not going to start making any unnecessary predictions about what’s going to happen this season and the last thing any of us need to do is build hopes up too much. But without doubt, we have the players to push United and Chelsea all the way. I think we are in a great place to challenge United and Chelsea and I hope if we get things right from the beginning we can beat them to the big prizes this year…”
Steven Gerrard, July 19, 2007“Obviously I have to be careful that I don’t send expectations through the roof again, but…I believe in this team and this manager, and believe we can make it happen…”
Steven Gerrard, May 13, 2008

Ha, I think the fact he says it every year and it never happens tells us all we need to know - they don’t have a chance!
Maybe he’s talking about winning the league outside of us, Man U and Arsenal by finishing above Everton and Villa again - I think they might even struggle to do that!

Hi to the guy above let me remind you that Avram Grant inherited a squad that is full of stars worth over 250 million Euros and Roman Abromovich has not been shy in spending more and bringing in more players. Had Liverpool been given an open cheque book like Mourinho who i believe is still responsible for the success of the club as he laid the foundation and not forgetting Claudio Ranieri. Manchester United far outshine Liverpool in Gate takings alone not to mention merchandising. We are only starting to buy quality players and we alomst there. Remember we scored an own goal and gave u a penalty that allowed for Chelsea to get to the finals in Moscow. Thanks to Liverpool and some bad refereeing u got there. We dont have the financial clout to compete in the transfer market besides that every target we go after is also aproached by Manu and CSKA chelski. So get your facts straight if it had not been for Roman and his billions Chelsea would be languishing in the middle of the league. Monet talks bullshit walks.

CSKA Chelski, what’s the name of your wonderfully English chairman again?
Don’t be so jealous that we have an owner who actually wanted to take our club forward rather than yours who are dragging you back further when you were already miles from the top!
