Badly-coiffed defender sows seeds of doubt in Gunners’ minds

Bacary Sagna

Each summer, everyone besides Steven Gerrard tries to figure out whether it’s Manchester United or Chelsea’s turn to win the Premier League. Gerrard, meanwhile, usually decides to humour the Kop faithful by announcing that it could be Liverpool’s year, only to sheepishly wave the white flag a few months into the season.

It looked like Arsenal were in danger of falling into the same trap when last month when Arsene Wenger announced that they would win everything in sight, but Bacary Sagna has urged caution by admitting in The Sun that the Gunners could be out of the title race by March:

“There is no point in planning ahead for next March because we cannot be certain that we will still be in the hunt for the title by then.

“Obviously, we all have regrets about last season and are hoping to improve on third place.

“But we need to learn from those lessons and that is why I don’t think it is a good idea to set ourselves a definite target for the new season.”

Are Arsenal going to struggle, or is Sagna slyly trying to lower expectations in the hope that they will mirror last season’s strong start? Let us know with a vote and comment below…

    Nope.

Fickle, weak mentality club with little to no ambition. They’ll end up third at best.

Anyone who thinks The Arsenal will not be in contention next season is a very silly person. Remember only 4 points off with all those injuries.

Dave I suggest a labotomy is in order for you

arsenal will be champions, bendtner will score 30 even ray charles could score 15 playing upfront for us,no dissrespect to franny jeffers or wiltord

  • 7 moutarde // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:47 am

of course they won’t - strange manager who loses the plot at the first sign of trouble, half the team want out, stadium is a silent corporate bowl, squad has no depth, might as well give up now…..

  • 11 Jack // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:52 am

I smell the whiff of fear from Spurs supporters. As for Arsenal? Who knows but I think they should be OK. Ramos will flop. 9 points from first 6 games. Klinsmann being lined up by March.

  • 12 caknucklehead // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:56 am

People need to stop worrying about what the… *ahem*… press are saying about Arsenal. The summer transfer window has a LOONG way to go. Stop the drama, Arsenal will ALWAYS be there! Arsene knows quality when he sees it, believe people, just believe.

  • 13 Goofle // Jul 10, 2008 at 11:57 am

We will do very well next season. It will be great to see Nasri, Vela, Traore, Bendtner, Walcott and Van Persie (finally) step up.

  • 19 Scooch // Jul 10, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Really does sound like last year “Henry’s gine so that means that Arsenal are gonna finish inthe bottom half of the table!!!”

This was usually followed by something along the lines of….

“Spurts are a top four team now anyway, we’ve come close to beating Arsenal on a couple of occasions, but they’re just too damn good for us!!!).

Don’t write us off!!! There’s still plenty of time left in the transfer window for Wenger to work his magic.

What I do want to know is what are the Spuds gonna talk about now that most of their “English” team aren’t gonna be around next season???

  • 20 DT // Jul 10, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Of course we will. To write us off without a ball being kicked is a sign of mental instability. Apparently we were going to finish behind Spurs before the start of last season - look what happened there.

To even ask this question is ridiculous. No finish outside the top four in the last 12 years and because some players *might* go it’s all doom and gloom.

I’d stick to writing funny things on here rather than trying to be a serious sports blog. You’re not very good at it

  • 21 gooner 4 life // Jul 10, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Whoever is slating arsenal for the fact some stars want to leave well we will have the last laugh

The fact some of our stars are moving over is a good thing. we will be left with the best and most loyal players.
with the money raised from selling tossers albeit good tossers like Hleb will be enough to bring backthe glory to tne emirates

  • 22 Chelsea Chap // Jul 10, 2008 at 2:55 pm

ade’s brother: if you are going to try out cockney terms it helps to get them right……it’s tin tack - tictac is a breathe mint - dopey gooner!

Incidently the ‘tictac’ is what your manager will get for another trophyless season!

It seems many Arsenal fans are buying into the fear bubbling in the press’ pot. That is why such silly questions as this are being raised. It would be far more sensible to look at the facts. Arsenal 4 points off being Champions with many players injured or tired last year. The squad has been strengthened. How? All the talented young players on the fringe/youth/reserves have matured/improved/developed in the last year. So the squad is improved/strengthened/deeper. Whilst Flamini was a very good player he is not difficult to replace. No player is irreplacable. I used to worry when players like Wright/Anelka/Vieira/Adams/Keown/Overmars/Bergkamp/Henry etc. etc. left Arsenal, but not anymore. Arsene has built something far more enduring than the career of one individual player. He has built a playing culture/phylosophy/signature and long will it continue. As we have said for a few years now, the Arsenal reserves could finish mid table and probably hold their own against many teams fancied by the press to break into the top 6. So if this is true, as I believe it is, then the squad from last season minus Flamini/Hleb/Adebayor will still finish in the top 3. Add Ramsey/Nasri/One Wenger Find and we will finish as Champions. So why were you all so worried? Because the press wanted you to be.
