Kop faithful hope new partnership will bring silverware

Rafa Benitez is Dr Evil

This morning, Rafa Benitez did his finest Dr Evil impression when he claimed that the whole of Europe will balk in fear at his brand new Keane/ Torres strike force:

“I think all the defences will be worried about stopping them.

“Other managers and defenders will be trying to sign players but with Robbie, Fernando, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel we will have great presence. It will be a big problem for other teams to cope with, that’s for sure.”

Having a strike partnership that put away nearly sixty goals between them last season will certainly help the Merseyside team, as will purchases including Degen, Dossena, Ngog, and Cavalieri. Plus, if they find the funds, the addition of want-away Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry will make for a formidable midfield.

But is this improved squad enough to win Liverpool their first title in nearly twenty years? The bookies think not, placing the Anfield side at 7/1 to win it - the longest odds of all the Big Four.

They’ll finish third above Arsenal, nothing more.

I think Torres and Keane are probably the best strike force in the Premier League but the loss of Mascherano at the start of the season, the lack of quality wingers besides Babel and the fact they have no world class defenders and their goalkeeper is only second in the overrated stakes to Petr Cech means I’m still not convinced.

1st Arsenal, 2nd Chelsea 3rd Man United 4th Liverpool for me - although I can’t justify why I put Arsenal first, it’s just an instinct!

With Barry and Silva as well, we have a good chance. Certainly within 5 points of the winners, or possibly 0 points…….

well based on the fact that we again won the golden gloves last year and just need to convert 6 of all of those draws t owins to put a totally different slant on last season and I think that it could make a difference.

It’s just annoying that the lieing pair of tossers that proclaim to be our new custodians haven’t kept any of their promises, our team woud be even stronger….

We closed the gap last year, if we close it further this season i’ll be happy. Still think we need to sort the wings out before we can really challenge.

I think we definitely need some wingers, well at least one, and to get rid of Voronin! I’d rather use one of the younger players to back up our strike force. Silva would be a good addition and Barry may well prove to be a good move, although hard to justify at present!
A lot also depends on what the other clubs do as well. Who the other three will lose this summer (if anyone) may have some bearing on the outcome of the PL!

I think that with the many millions Rafa has spent compared with anyone bar Chelsea, anything less than the league championship this year and we should seriously consider a replacement!

The strike force is impressive but, will Gerrard- again- have spend his time and energy cleaning up messes? Hopefully, Babel can develop into something more than someone who gets by on his physical abilities.

Though they’re not exactly loaded at the back, with Mascherano, I don’t foresee Liverpool giving up an excessive amount of goals.
