If there’s one thing that really sticks in The Spoiler’s craw, it’s footballer’s who shatter the illusion that they actually care about playing for their club. They’ve all been out and about this summer - Adebayor, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Barry - clamouring their despondent drums, reminding the world that football is a sordid money-making business. Men in suits, big fat cigars, soulless badge kissing - that’s your modern football right there. It’s depressing.

Hence, Ronaldo has surely lost the terraces now. United fans could forgive him the winks, the incessant step-overs, the god-awful haircuts, but can they forgive him not loving them like they thought he did?
