So, is John Terry the right choice, or would you rather see Rio Ferdinand leading the pack? Or perhaps someone less thuggish/ liable to merk everyone, like the relatively wholesome Steven Gerrard? Votes and comments below, please.

Rio has made mistakes in the past but he would set a much better example in terms of performance on the pitch and being a role model off it. Terry is a disgrace and after captaining us through the Euro 2008 qualifying flop, I can’t believe he gets another chance.

An ordinary thug who happens to play professional football is made England captain. This is truly a shocking decision by Capello. Anyone but Terry would have been OK.

You have to wonder why Terry was chosen over Ferdinand. On current form, and over the last year or two, Rio has been head and shoulders above Terry. When it comes to charity and public relations, Rio does vastly more. Just as an example, when the Fa worked with the anti-knife crime group yesturday, they chose David James, David Beckham, and Rio Ferdinand.
    Where was John Terry then?

The only reason I can see him getting picked is sympathy. Terry’s quotes in the papers over the last view days were quite pathetic. He’d probably have an emo haircut by now if he wasn’t balding.

There was only one man for the job, Mr Steven Gerrard. Easily our best player and one of the most inspirational players ever. Has Terry ever won an FA Cup on his own or dragged his team back to win a champions league trophy.

Both Ferdinand and Terry are poor choices. Unfortunately England don’t have many options. The fact that Rio Ferdinand was considered as Captain when he isn’t even a club captain and can’t string a sentence together would suggest he is not the man for the job. How can he possibly inspire the team to greater things. All he does is moan. Gerrard should possibly have been given the chance. He knows how to get the best from medicre players afterall!

how terry can be england captain is beyond me. i was very surprised when UEFA said he did not spit at tevez when video evidence showed he clearly did so. steven gerrard or rio should have been named captain.

Look at Mr Terry’s recent behaviour, remind yourself that he’s being given Bobby Moore’s armband to wear then ask yourself if he’s worthy.

Capello has made a grave error here.

I think Terry was a hugh mistake, he is one of the worst players for showing respect to the refs, he is no role model after crying in the champions league, he should of kept his head up high and not cried. Hard selection for Capello, but had to be Stevie G

Freddie you say Gerrard is England’s best player but how many performances like the FA Cup Final and Champions League Final performances you mention has he delivered for England? I’m no Lampard fan but I think he’s done more in his England career than Gerrard.

I agree with honest abe that Ferdinand does far more good outside of football than Terry. Xyth is right too - it’s the equivilent of Kevin Keegan appointing Joey Barton as Newcastle captain.

No doubt Mr.Steven Gerrard should take the armban.Rio always make mistakes if there will not be Van Der Sar GK he will always score own Goals. And John Terry don’t have any chance of being England national team Captain cus he doesn’t have respect for other players and Ref. So STEVEN GERRARD IS THE BEST SOLUTION. do it DON FABIO;)..!!

Rimmer.com, did you make me a cup of tea once?

  • 14 ron // Aug 19, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Rio should of had it handed to him.His an all rounder and works for his team not for his own gain, unlike mr terry.I’m actually glad he didn’t get given that responsibility as the team are’nt good enough to progress onto better things and i believe he would of been blamed for any future failers. Now watch mr.terrys head grow.

You’re all deluded if you really think it makes any difference who captains the team. There are 11 professionals on the field who are chosen partially due to the fact that they are the best in their profession, and hence do not need captaining. Unless the manager is banned from the touchline he is the one who determines the teams formation and tactics, the captaincy at this level is merely a badge of honour.
Compare the number of games where Terry, Gerrard or Rio have captained their domestic team and match that against the games they simply played in… you’ll find the numbers are so similar that the identity of the captain was largely irrelevant. Wake up to realism, guys.

I think Another Dave should be captain. His insight and honesty are a credit to the man.

  • 19 ron // Aug 19, 2008 at 2:53 pm

  • 22 my birds a gooner // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:33 pm

we should play Emma Bunton in midfield as captain with Ginger Spice left-back on the touchline giving blowjobs :) and Poshnoshbeckhambitch doing handjobs on the opposing goalie all thru the match!!! :)

  • 23 t3d // Aug 19, 2008 at 3:53 pm

shame england persists with this racist as captain, sad state of affairs, as long as we have this ‘ingerlund’ mentality then i and most rational england fans can’t be bothered, we’re not going to win anything under J ‘thinks he’s a bigman but is really a fascist crybaby’ T.

  • 24 Billy // Aug 19, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    I don’t understand

John Terry has hounded Refs and even grabbed the arm of a ref while trying to hand a team mate a red card.

Rio “you been merked” Ferdinand, need i say any more.

Steven Gerrard all england fans need to be truthful in their views, the change for the better to his game when he was given the armband for LFC. He rose his game so far, dragged LFC with him. Those that say he’s never performed for England then surley this would help, any make England better. It would also keep Lumplard out of his position.

  • 25 b // Aug 19, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Thanks for that statement my bird’s a gooner it’s nice to know racists prefer other racists to captain England. By the way becks was also at the campaign despite his “tone”. Terry does shit when it comes to contributing to society.

  • 26 aristeia // Aug 19, 2008 at 8:36 pm

What a sack of shit. Not that I thought Rio would have been the right choice either– I know I’m biased, but Gerrard should have been given the honor. He has “captain” burned into his soul, dammit. And Terry? What an effing crybaby. Bah!

  • 27 Another Dave // Aug 20, 2008 at 8:42 am
