Tomorrow’s headlines today…
Arsene Wenger admitted in June that he’s been tracking the progress of Vincent Kompany since he was 16, but that he wouldn’t sign him this summer because his defence didn’t need strengthening (which seems strange considering they’ve just bought Mikael Silvestre).
Anyway, it looks like someone at the City of Manchester Stadium with supersonic hearing listened to Wenger coo and decided the Belgian defender might be a useful asset. His German club Hamburg, managed by Steve McClaren impersonator Martin Jol, have confirmed that they have agreed a fee with Mark Hughes’ side.
Elsewhere, Bolton are looking to change their transfer policy. After years of signing mediocre players (Gavin McCann, Heidar Helguson, Danny Shittu etc.) and supposed ‘bad eggs’ (El Hadji Diouf and Nicolas Anelka) it looks like Bolton are finally going to try buying good players without reputations for being trouble makers, if recent comments by Gary Megson are anything to go by. He said: “There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to try and bring in two good players. They have to be the right kind of people.” Exciting times in Greater Manchester.
