Less people expected to come and boo
Reports are coming through from our many sources in the North East that there could be as few at 15,000 fans at St James Park tonight for the Carling Cup tie against Spurs. Given that season ticket holders had the option to buy up their ticket for the game, many are supposedly staying away. Firstly because they, like us, think the Carling Cup is a waste of time, but, more precisely, because they still haven’t forgiven Mike Ashley for making their beloved club look totally stupid.
But, come on Geordies, is this really fair on the players? Michael Owen surely won’t be bothered about scoring if there’s no one around to scream about how brilliant he is.

Can’t say I’m surprised - it’s such a myth that they are the best fans in the country. Reminds me of when they all snuck out early when Birmingham battered them 5-1 in the FA Cup a few years ago.

…when they all snuck out early…? So your basing your opinion, that their not the best fans in the in the country, on the fact that some of them left early in a game where they were getting beat 5-1 off a team in a lower division?

More insane ramblings from a southern, know nothing chimp! Let me ask you two things ….
Is Mike Ashley your dad?
What do you know about this Carlos Tevez affair
Now the second question IS a comment I would like to hear your opinion on !

Not true - I didn’t leave early when Chelsea killed us by four goals last season or when Man United took a 3-0 lead against us after about 20 minutes. Neither did I leave when we were 1-0 down at home to League Two strugglers Macclesfield with ten minutes to go.
I never once said I based my opinion on them not being the best fans in the country on that, it was just an example. Another is that I have experienced other clubs with better atmospheres, the fickleness of many of their fans, the way hundreds of them went down to the ground the other week the night Keegan was about to walk just to get on Sky Sports and make stupid comments on the cameras, the ‘King Kev can do no wrong mentality’, the turning on Ashley straight away then some people regretting it when they read his statement. There are a lot of great Newcastle fans - I just don’t think they’re the best.

Upminster Iron blows tramps for bags of crushed cans. I base that opinion on as much substance as his twatful comments are founded.

Here we go again, having a pop at the toon fans!!!!
15000 is still more than a lot of clubs for a Carling Cup game especially since it is live on Sky Sports. After all the sh!te that the club has been through and the rubbish that the fans put up with by the press, managers, owners and the rest of the footballing nation and this for a decade or more, not just this season, not think we have a right to show how we feel for a couple of games?
I very much dowt that we have any chance at all winning anything this season so does it matter that we aren’t at the match tonight, the players know fine well that it is the owner of the club that the demonstration is against.
And I’m not one of these that say we are the best fans in the world, best club in the world and that we are going to win everything this season, I would however like us to play some consistent football, whether that is sh!te, average or excellent, just get off the roller coaster!!!

Upminster W****r, every club has supporters who leave early, whether they win, lose or draw. How many Newcastle supporters do you know? Just wondering where your basing your opinion of them being fickle, believing Keegan can do no wrong, turning on Ashley straight away and supposedly regretting it once they read his statement.

I know that Carlos Tevez played in 26 games for us of which we only won eight. I know he scored just six goals. I know that before he signed we had four points from our opening three games - including a trip to Anfield. So that meant we averaged 1.33 points a game before he arrived but just 1.06 after he arrived. I know that we lost 3-0 to Sheffield United with Tevez playing 90 minutes - should we have those three points back? I know that Sheffield United were eleven points above us with nine games to go and still got relegated. I know that all they had to do was beat a Wigan side at home who hadn’t won in eight and went down to ten men and they lost. I also know that the main evidence the tribunal used to justify our relegation is that we wouldn’t have won 1-0 at Old Trafford without Tevez but that ignores the fact that a 0-0 draw was enough for us to finish 16th still and we earned that clean sheet through out defence. And I know that in spite of all this we are told by a know-nothing judge that there is absolutely no doubt that without Tevez we would have been relegated. Despite us finishing the previous season in the top half and outplaying Liverpool in the FA Cup Final.
Why what do you know, The Iron Above Is A Mong?
And you think you get a rough ride from the media!

I already said above that this wasn’t referring to all Newcastle fans. I also said I know some who are great fans, I just don’t believe as a collective unit they are ‘the best fans in the country’ for all of the reasons mentioned above.
For the same reason I wouldn’t classify our fans as the best either. The core of our support is brilliant - really witty and funny and always getting behind the team - but we also have a fickle element (although our minority demanding Curbs sacking was far less than the Newcastle ones I mentioned). People generalise about us too because of these muppets but you have to accept that - it’s the way people work - the smaller group of fans that boo loudly and act like muppets will always be heard over the people in the corner singing songs about the players on the pitch and rising above the negativity.

Difference is Upminster is that 99% of us would agree that West Ham were hard done to but won’t have a go at you or anything because it is fo0k all to do with us, not our club so it isn’t something we should slag you off for.

I don’t think it is your fault, it is the way the press portray us to the rest of the world, always on our back, people from Newcastle were voted as the most polite people in the country and the most likely to talk to a stranger where as in London people will ignore you and have ne manners at all. Yet Newcastle supporters are voted as stupid, ignorant and violent, it’s exactly the same people living in Newcastle that support the footy team!!

To be fair I was being provocative in my first comment although I do think 15000 is poor showing considering your capacity. In much the same way I was disappointed we only had a pathetic 10000 for our home Carling Cup game with Macclesfield - it’s disappointing when both sets of fans have good reputations and yet we get poor showings like that.
For what it’s worth I’m not swayed by the fact that all NUFC fans are the same as the ones that get shown on SSN - most of the ones I encounter at games seem sound. There is obviously an element of your support that thinks Keegan can do no wrong or that you should be in the Big Four but it’s nowhere near as bad as at Spurs and as I say the majority are good. I do feel your support is overrated in that it is not the best because that ignorant minority present a bad image of you as a whole and I have seen louder fans but you are still on the whole great fans. Nowhere near as overrated as Liverpool. Derby were the best fans I saw last season funnily enough.

Well at least we have a common understanding ;-)
My dad is a Mackem and I’m a Geordie so I get along with any fans just so long as we finish above Sunderland (needless to say, I’m scared this season)

Ref- Upminister Iron.
I’m sure there’s a link on the Football Attendances website that puts the Toon as having the 6th best average home attendances of all time, 1892 to date.Man Utd were top, but from 2nd to about 8th there wasn’t a lot in it.I don’t think the Hammers were in the top ten and that is not a criticism of your boys.Neither were Sunderland!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
17 Upminster Iron // Sep 24, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Obviously major factors in that are the fact that your ground is double the size of ours and your a one-team city. I was referring to quality of support > size and I didn’t imply that ours was any better, just that yours isn’t the best…in my opinion.
