Champions League, 7.45pm, Sky Sports 2, Free £10 bet
After being thrashed 3-0 at home by Atletico Madrid - a team who hadn’t played Champions League football for over eleven years - in their opening game, it’s hard to see PSV taking anything from Anfield against a Liverpool team who have broken the habit of a lifetime and opened with an away win.
Here’s five reasons why Liverpool will win and how to make money on tonight’s game, courtesy of our well informed amigos at chickendinner:
1. The sides have clashed twice before in the Champions League at Anfield and on both occasions Liverpool have been victorious.
2. Rafael Benitez’s side are unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions since losing to Manchester United on March 23 (this excludes their extra-time defeat to Chelsea).
3. PSV have won just three of their last eight away games in all competitions.
4. And while one of those wins was away to Tottenham in last season’s UEFA Cup, they have won just one of their last six Champions League games on the road.
5. On the last two occasions where Liverpool have won their Champions League opener they have either gone through the group unbeaten or not lost until qualification was assured.
Top Tips
Liverpool to win to nil - 10/11 with Paddy Power - Liverpool and PSV have clashed four times in the Champions League with the Dutch side failing to score a single goal. PSV have scored one goal in their last six Champions League games.
Gerrard to score first - 11/2 with Bet365 - In two of the last three encounters between these two sides Gerrard grabbed the first goal. The England midfielder scored both of Liverpool’s goals away in Marseille a fortnight ago.
One to avoid
Liverpool to win both halves - 21/10 with Paddy Power - This bet is always popular when English teams are at home in the Champions League but should be approached with caution. Fifteen games have passed since Liverpool were last victorious in both halves in the 2-0 win over Fulham in April.
