Top clubs told to improve their finances or else

Cristiano Ronaldo modelling a Premier League salary cap.
FA chairman Lord Triesman has threatened to bring in an enforced salary cap on English clubs after a damning appraisal of the state of the finances of many clubs. The cap - possibly looking something like the one above - is likely to be opposed by the clubs themselves, but the FA could force the proposal into place to avoid clubs being sucked into the current global uncertainty. Lord Triesman said:

“In the current climate it could be that we have to work out [wage] restraints and what they might be. A sensible form of [wage] restraint would make sense and it is not inconceivable. It’s very hard to do anything unless all parties want to do it and everyone needs to want to do it. Preferably without being compelled.”
