We at The Spoiler are huge fans of Alan Shearer’s unique brand of punditry - the way he strips away any signs of analysis, insight and useful information is truly masterful. On Sunday’s edition of MOTD2 he produced some gems that will undoubtedly change the way we all look at the beautiful game. Enjoy some choice cuts…
Shearer on Van Persie’s offside goal at Stamford Bridge:
“Scolari has been having a go at the referee, but it’s actually the linesman who makes offside decisions, so he should be having a go at him.”
So it’s the linesman who is in charge of offsides now? Wow, we had no idea. Thanks for clearing that one up, Alan, we had no idea the man whose primary function is to call offside decisions was in charge of offside decisions. Tell us more…
Shearer on Cristiano Ronaldo’s second yellow card:
“In this replay you can clearly see that the referee doesn’t blow the whistle until after Ronaldo commits the foul.”
Granted, C-Ron claimed to handle the ball after hearing a phantom whistle, but was it particularly helpful to analyse a slow motion replay (without any sound) showing us that the referee didn’t blow up for a foul that hadn’t been committed yet?
It worked out pretty well for Havant and Waterlooville last year…
Histon, who overcame Leeds 1-0 earlier today, were left disappointed after being paired with Swansea in an underwhelming FA Cup third round draw. However, last year it was Havant and Waterlooville who drew the Welsh side at this stage and after getting through that tie they were rewarded with a trip to Anfield.
Barrow got the best draw of the non-league clubs and will make the trip to Middlesbrough while Forest Green face Derby and Eastwood travel away to Notts County or Crawley. Holders Portsmouth face Bristol City while runners-up Cardiff face Reading. Chelsea and Arsenal were drawn at home to Southend and Plymouth respectively while Liverpool and Manchester United are away to Preston and Southampton.
The other interesting ties see Sheffield United drawn in East London against Leyton Orient on the same day that their ”Tevezgate” enemies West Ham face Barnsley, who are considering legal action against the Blades after Chris Morgan’s horror elbow on Iain Hume: don’t be surprised to see one of those games moved to the Sunday! Check out the full draw after the jump:
Goal compilation with an irritating soundtrack, anyone?
Serbain sensation Zoran Tošić (nicknamed “Bambi” for his scrawny build) is all set to join Manchester Utd in the transfer window, and judging by this video, the 21-year-old has never set foot in the penalty box. He just nails in awesome shots from outside it.
Looks like C-Ron has some fierce competition on the free-kick taking winger front…
While filming an Adidas advert, Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack was aiming to put a ball through a hoop, but instead hit what Bild describe as another gentleman’s “fun centre.”
It’s possible that this is a deliberate mistake for the sake of making a hilarious viral, but then Adidas would have had to recruit for a “stupid man willing to risk future fatherhood by getting pelted in the knackers by world class footballer.” We doubt there would be too many takers.
One would think it impossible for Manchester Utd and Chelsea to fail to win for the third time in nine days, yet the folks at chickendinner believe there could be upsets at Eastlands and Stamford Bridge on “Super Sunday”. Here’s why Chelsea may struggle:
1. Before Liverpool ended Chelsea’s record top-flight run without a home defeat earlier this season, Arsenal were the last team to take three points from Stamford Bridge.
2. Chelsea have won just three of their seven home league games this season, whereas even Fulham and Stoke have won five each.
