One would think it impossible for Manchester Utd and Chelsea to fail to win for the third time in nine days, yet the folks at chickendinner believe there could be upsets at Eastlands and Stamford Bridge on “Super Sunday”. Here’s why Chelsea may struggle:
1. Before Liverpool ended Chelsea’s record top-flight run without a home defeat earlier this season, Arsenal were the last team to take three points from Stamford Bridge.
2. Chelsea have won just three of their seven home league games this season, whereas even Fulham and Stoke have won five each.
3. Their general form hasn’t been much better, with the Blues winning just two of their last six. Those wins came against Blackburn and West Brom, the Premier League’s bottom two.
4. Chelsea have taken just one point from their two encounters with Big Four rivals so far this season whereas Arsenal won their first against Manchester United three weeks ago. There is a parallel to the 2006-07 where the Gunners won just six of their opening fourteen games - one less than this season - but comfortably topped the Big Four mini-league.
5. In each of the last two season’s Arsenal have led at the Bridge with twenty minutes to go. The chances of Chelsea scoring a late winner like last year are slimmer now as they haven’t scored later than the 55th minute in their last five domestic home games, compared to six in five games prior to facing Arsenal last season.
chickendinner betting tip of the week: Nicolas Anelka’s last home league start against former club Arsenal came two years ago when he scored twice to guide Bolton to a 3-1 win.
