Short sleeves in winter: commendable or ridiculous?

Plenty of Premiership stars don’t realise it’s cold outside

Rafael you nutter!

It’s been mighty chilly in Blighty over the past few weeks (although not as cold as Germany), and the Premier League’s pampered stars could almost be forgiven for wanting a little more protection from the elements. But no! Plenty of players have been bucking the gloves and long sleeve trend, preferring to wear their manliness on their (lack of) sleeves.

You could name an England team (Lampsie, JT, Gerrard and Scholes etc) out of the players who have refused to wear long sleeve shirts during the cold snap, and The Spoiler has also been quite surprised at how many foreign players have been “going Geordie” lately.

A tip of the cap goes to Australians Tim Cahill and Brett Emerton, Liverpool’s Javier Macherano and Manchester United Brazilians Rafael and Anderson. Nemanja Vidic’s achievement in the field of baring one’s arms has also been excptional, but nothing less than one would expect from a rock-hard Serbian.

Meanwhile, the most embarrassing Englishman award goes to Aaron Lennon who has been rocking the Dimitar Berbatov long-sleeves-and-gloves combo since October.

So, are short sleeves in winter madness, or a visual representation of a strong work ethic, dogged determination and a desire to conquer adversity?

Chelsea fans may wish to answer that question by looking at the “35 per cent” efforts of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, and the “80 per cent” contributions of Mr Terry and Mr Lampard…

What ever happened to long sleeve shirts?! Remember when footballers used to have actual long sleeve shirts instead of short sleeve shirts with Jane Fonda leotards underneath?

I can understand not using the long sleeves. I always get a bit overheated when I exercise in long sleeves. I wear short sleeves while I run… even in the dead of winter.

I’m from Argentina, and while in winter it would be smart to use long sleeves, I still found them extremely uncomfortable. I own one, but I rarely use them for football, it annoys the hell out of me. I know it’s colder up there, but maybe the same idea can be applied.
