Spurs scrape through to Carling Cup Final
Burnley 3/ Tottenham 2 (Spurs win 6-4 on aggregate)
With three minutes to go in extra time, it looked as if the 2008/09 season was about to give us another incredible moment. Championship side Burnley - who dismissed Chelsea and Arsenal on the way to this tie - had bounced back from the defeat at White Hart Lane to lead 3-0 at Turf Moor, and were about to cause another huge upset at the hands of a dismal Tottenham side.
Before the game, the Lancashire side were at 100-1 to progress to the final, and were just three minutes away from rewarding the ten or so people in the world who backed them when Roman Pavlyuchenko decided to put one on target. Minutes later, Jermain Defoe cruelly put the game out of reach with a long range effort.
Tottenham may have earned the right to defend their League Cup trophy, but they should be gravely concerned after last night’s shoddy performance. For the most part, they were completely lacklustre, which does not bode well for the almighty relegation scrap that lies ahead.
Anyone who played last night would be lucky to represent their team at Wembley in March.
