Liverpool boss is responsible for Madrid’s beloved captain
Ahead of tonight’s Champions league clash with Real Madrid, Rafa Benitez - pictured above at a press conference with Jemain from Flight of the Conchords - has been talking about his time at the club.
In an interview with El Mundo, the Liverpool manager proudly admitted that he was the one who brought Raúl to Los Blancos. Here’s our best attempt at a translation:
“Raul was in the Atlético Madrid youth team when I decided to sign him for Madrid. I hardly used him in the end, because he went staright up to the first team and did not return.”
In the interview, Benitez also said he wished tonight’s match was taking place at a later stage in the campaign:
“I would have liked to have met Real Madrid in the final in Rome. Not for any sentimental reason, but because Madrid is a big team with very many good players.”
