Sol Campbell opens a fan abuse can of worms

Sol Campbell

In an effort to endear himself to Tottenham fans, Sol Campbell has stated that he believes football authorities should deduct points from clubs whose fans are found guilty of indecent or racist chanting.

In an interview with The Guardian, the Pompey captain said:

“I think that they [the game’s authorities] are going to have to do more. My situation is a small part. But also, you have the racial abuse in the rest of Europe. The only way you can stop it from happening is by taking points from clubs. Then it would definitely stop. If it’s just way over the top and you start taking points … [with] those three points, you can lose the championship or you can be going down. That’s the only way you can stop fans’ abuse on that type of level.

“Football seems to think it can keep on going without getting checked. In most other sports on this level, it doesn’t happen. You’re not going to get that in tennis, rugby, cricket or athletics. It’s just not accepted.”

Of course, racism in any form should not be tolerated in the game, and such harsh measures would surely give the motivation to eradicate inappropriate fan behaviour. But on the other hand, should a team suffer for the ignorance of a minority of fans? Let us know your thoughts below…

    Perspective please mr campbell.
    1. there was never any racist chanting by spurs fans at campbell, anti gay yes, indecent yes. So please drop the race card it’s being falsely played here.
    2. For fairness you would also have to have points deductions for clubs whose players are indecent and abusive to referees and or opponents ? (might bring the big boys down a bit as they are the main culprits (ashley cole, Rooney, Ferdinand, Terry, entire arsenal team)

I wasnt talking about racism, meerly the chants from spurs fans to sol.

If your talking racism then most the european int teams would be screwed, aka when spain i think it was were making monkey noises.

Why doesn’t this clown shut up? He wasn’t racially abused. At the end of the day he deserves all the mocking he gets. He did what he did for personal gain and that’s OK, but to move from Spurs to Arsenal and not expect to get a reaction is rather naive. All fotball fans are passionate and I’m sure if an Arsenal player did the opposite it would be juust the same.

Does this mean Arsenal, Chelsea& West Ham will get points deducted for the anti-semetic songs,or has Solzeer and the rest of football never heared them songs before? There was never a race issue with Solzeer,we jus hate him for who he is…Judas!

Am I the only one astonished that these Spurs fans can’t see why a song that evokes the image of a black man hanging from a tree might be interpreted as a bit racist?

Mr Blackett …. perhaps you should read the bible, Judas (Spurs fans’ pet name for Campbell) was found “hanging from a tree”. Sorry to block ANOTHER attempt of someone to (over) play the race card !!
