Chelsea/Liverpool, UCL Qtr-Final 2nd Leg ITV1, 7.45pm
Our hombres at chickendinner wouldn’t suggest robbing a bank or breaking into your life savings to bet on Liverpool progressing but at 12/1 with Bet365 and Boylesports, it may be worth neutrals putting a few quid on them to provoke interest in tonight’s clash. Here are four attempts to justify such a long shot:
1. Liverpool have won four of their last six matches by a margin of three goals or greater.
2. Chelsea conceded three goals in just nine minutes against Bolton, who had scored just once in six hours and 35 minutes of away football prior to that.
3. The Blues have shipped three or more at home on four separate occasions in the last 26 months - against Spurs, Leicester, Aston Villa and now Bolton.
4. Liverpool have scored three or more goals in six away games this season.

Some Reasons why Liverpool will be knocked out of Europe tonight:
1. Liverpool have failed to score in three of their previous four CL matches at Stamford Bridge. Last season they scored twice in their 3-2 defeat after extra time at Chelsea. Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel providing the goals.
2. Sides winning the first leg 1-3 away, historically have a 97% chance of advancing in European competition.
3. Chelsea have only lost twice at home in the league this season, to Liverpool and Arsenal, and both were by the single goal.

What a sad lot you mousers are. Liverpool may have won the European Cup, of which they try to cling to “past glory”. … if you want to live in the past, there was also a time when liverpool …have only won at the bridge once in the past 48 months… We will show you are you for what you are…… jumped up waiters
3 Scott // Apr 14, 2009 at 1:35 pm
“We will show you are you for what you are”
…..Murdering, self pitying lowlifes who equate success to history?
Rather apt.
4 daza99 // Apr 14, 2009 at 1:59 pm
It is quite sad when you attack someone with the word “murderer”, you truly are a jealous low life scum of a person, you will never have what we call dignity. one day you will lose something close to you, but you probaly are a loner in life.
5 deano // Apr 14, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I don’t see how chelsea can talk, before winning the title 2 years in a row they hadn’t won it for 48 years and only with the bankroll of a fuckin billionaire.
Liverpool still remain the most successful club in English history while Chelsea have won the league 3 times in 48 years. What an ignorant twat to call us murderers. Fuckin scummy chelsea fans
6 McRib // Apr 14, 2009 at 2:15 pm
“We will show you are you for what you are…”
Higher than you in the league? Winners against you home and away? Yes we talk about our history a lot, that’s because we have one to be proud of. You do not.
7 Phil // Apr 14, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Scott, your childish petulance, lack of consideration to not only Liverpool, but all true football fans in this country and sheer nonsensical comments just goes to outline how unintelligent, and frankly, stupid you really are, get a grip man…
Whatever the outcome of tonight’s game, the dignity and upstanding nature of Liverpool fans will always win over low life remarks such as yours.
8 Damien // Apr 14, 2009 at 3:38 pm
With the greatest of respect to Liverpool fans, its hard to agree with the dignity comment as whenever you lose, you refer to the glory that most of you werent alive to see.
I could understand an old kopite sitting there in his chair, too old to get down to anfield anymore, talking about league success, but why suggest bitter comments about Chelsea buying the league? Man U have been doing it for ages, Liverpool have just bought poorly, so couldnt do it. Football is about money gentleman, the sooner you stop referring to ‘buying a title’, the better.
Chelsea have a 97% chance of success tonight, but football is a funny game.
I for one, as a Chelsea supporter will sit and watch and expect distaster, as thats what being a Chelsea fan is all about.
Enjoy football lads, dont moan about it :)
Good luck to both teams…
9 McRib // Apr 14, 2009 at 3:43 pm
“you refer to the glory that most of you werent alive to see.”
Nonsense. Liverpool won 19 trophies in the 80’s. I would say most of us were alive then.
10 Damien // Apr 14, 2009 at 3:50 pm
its been 30 years since then, and most supporters were 25-35, do you think all those liverpool fans are on the internet discussing it on ‘thespoiler.co.uk’…
i think not.
11 McRib // Apr 14, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Again, nonsense. 30 years ago was 1979. What about the cups we won in the mid to late 80s? They were only 20-25 ago. Meaning anyone now around 30 remembers them.
Anyway, why does it matter if you were around when those titles were won? If you support your club then you can be proud of it - past and present. Saying otherwise is as stupid as saying you can’t celebrate Christmas because you weren’t alive when Jesus was born.
12 Damien // Apr 14, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Football and Jesus are 2 very different things. There you go again, referring to history to prove a point. Dammit man, cant you live in the now, and know that Liverpool havent wont a Premiership ever?
Yes, your gonna tell me you won a 5th European Cup… well done, winning a cup is not based on the best team winning it, its the luckiest team.
If you want to bang on about history, Chelsea in the last 6 years have won more european ties than anyone. we just have yet to do so in a final.
But we are still in it… and who knows, maybe this year will be our year. Its luck, as it was that JT should slip on a wet soggy pitch. It happens…
Winning a league is an altogether different kettle of fish, one you havent managed to boil………. yet.
Are you proud of your history… or just keep referring to it as you have nothing recent to shout about.
Footie is a good thing, and its something we should be passionate about, but surely in the here and now. How often do you hear Man U fans banging on about them being the greatest club in recent history like Liverpool fans do.
There are more Liverpool and Man u fans in london, than there are fans from their locality. Do you think thats cos they are proud of your history too?
Pah.
Some facts for you concerning tonights game…
Chelsea have never conceded three goals at Stamford Bridge in European competition in 72 games.
Importantly, just once has a side gone through having lost the first leg at home, Ajax overcoming Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals.
All-English clashes offer cold comfort for Liverpool too: the Blues have not lost at home to an English team in Europe and Liverpool have never beaten one away.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it mr 25yo liverpool FAN who was riding his bike in a park the last time liverpool won a league ;)
anyway, ive got stuff to do, nice debating with you :) good luck for tonight (wouldnt see a liverpool fan wishing a chelsea fan good luck, maybe cos ur too dignified)
tut ta.
13 McRib // Apr 14, 2009 at 4:26 pm
“There you go again, referring to history to prove a point.”
Well sir, that would be because we were debating history!
“Winning a league is an altogether different kettle of fish, one you havent managed to boil………. yet.”
Correct. We’re getting closer, and we will win it. Then we’ll make sure you never ever forget it!
14 Sir Cecil // Apr 14, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I am constantly amused by Liverpool fans’ talk of “history.”
The entire history of the Premier League shows not a single Liverpool achievement. Liverpool has won no more Premiership titles than Luton, Brentford or Brighton.
Is there anyone out there who saw an old Liverpool league title who doesn’t now wear dentures?
15 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 15, 2009 at 5:05 am
McRib:
“Correct. We’re getting closer, and we will win it. Then we’ll make sure you never ever forget it!”
And there is the problem, if you do ever eventually somehow manage to win a premiership, i don’t know let’s pretend united go into administration and Liverpool happens to jammy it in, then singing about it for the next 50 years is exactly why other teams hate you.
You have HISTORY, well done, we get it, but every other team in the worlds point is this, what bearing does history have on a current game? None, nothing what so ever.
Hence us Chelsea fans don’t crow on about back to back premierships, a feat that liverpool have not managed (meaning premiership once again to clarify for nit picking scousers) to do, nor will you do for at least 3 years, and even then i don’t think that will happen.
Good luck with the league, you’ll need it and it’s all you have left to stop another trophiless season, meanwhile Chelsea will continue on our way to a potential double, as i don’t think the league is achievable anymore.
Good effort Liverpool, however we just wanted it more, out played you at Anfield, and did the necessary keeping pace at home, done and dusted.
16 McRib // Apr 15, 2009 at 10:04 am
“You have HISTORY, well done, we get it, but every other team in the worlds point is this, what bearing does history have on a current game? None, nothing what so ever.”
Who said it has anything to do with the current game? Yes you bought back-to-back premier league titles, but that’s it. You don’t shout about it because you weren’t contenders before Roman came along and you know your recent success is shallow.
Those silly flags that the club give out to your fans make me laugh too. Can’t you make your own?
17 McRib // Apr 15, 2009 at 10:07 am
Also, this Premier League you keep going on about… is this the league in which we’re currently ahead of you?
18 True Blue // Apr 15, 2009 at 10:34 am
Go on Liverpool, keep lecturing on about your history.
Maybe look up once in a while and see who’s still awake.
19 Ronaldo // Apr 15, 2009 at 11:02 am
Ok, does anyone really care about Liverpool’s ‘istory?
20 McRib // Apr 15, 2009 at 11:54 am
Yes, Liverpool fans do! We’re very proud of being the most successful English team. I wouldn’t expect Chelsea fans to understand.
Keep waving your little flag the club gave you and booing your team at half time when you’re winning. Forget the fact that you bought the league twice and that your most beloved players all came from West Ham.
21 f1sh // Apr 15, 2009 at 12:57 pm
McRib, how much money have Liverpool spent in the past few seasons? that would be around the same as Chelsea did. And you say the BOUGHT the titles? Well MU bought the titles for that matter also. No matter how much you pay you cannot buy ONE title.
22 McRib // Apr 15, 2009 at 1:09 pm
“how much money have Liverpool spent in the past few seasons? that would be around the same as Chelsea did.”
Yes, but neither of us won the league in the past few seasons.
Regardless, my argument was that you weren’t even contenders before you started throwing stupid amounts of money at players. You have spent over a quarter of a billion since Roman came along, Liverpool haven’t spent anywhere near that much.
23 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 15, 2009 at 3:31 pm
McRib:
“Forget the fact that you bought the league twice and that your most beloved players all came from West Ham.”
Meanwhile all of Liverpool’s starting 11 were brought throught the academy, right?
Reina?
Arbeloa?
Agger?
Skrtel?
Mascherano?
Aurelio?
Lucas?
Alonso?
Ngog?
Torres?
Kuyt?
Babel?
So that would leave….Gerrard and Carragher being the only 2 players Liverpool can claim as their own, the fact that we bought players from West Ham and that those players were English just solidifies the point that Liverpool had to BUY titles, only problem being the titles haven’t come.
“Regardless, my argument was that you weren’t even contenders before you started throwing stupid amounts of money at players.”
Yeah, i guess all those top 6 finishes in the 5-10 years prior to Abramovich arriving at Chelsea were all imaginary? We really hadn’t established ourselves as a liable threat then had we? Oh wait, that’s right, all those times we almost broke the big three were before we could afford to spend like United, Liverpool and Arsenal, and then the seasons that we could afford to match them we went on to become one of the most dominant teams in world football let alone england over the next 4-5 years…hm, that kinda pisses on your theory doesn’t it?
Any other accusations or attempted put downs to try and throw here McRib, come on, entertain me…
24 Damien // Apr 15, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Ah McRib, are you going to congratulate the better team for winning? thought not my old mate.
The fact Chelsea could ave won the league on a shoestring before (ie when we had zola and tore andre flo up front), and spent not a lot of money doing it, shows that we should have something to shout about. you have been consistantly 20-30 points behind the eventual winners. Now you were in the lead, and fucked that up like u did last night, you are all loud n proud.
Tell me, why were u quiet for so many years…
and yet you still havent won a league.
Christ, get the picture, no one cares about liverpool and their history, history is just that, its past, its gone, and it wont help u win a league in the future. you have to ‘earn’ that, so try telling stevie g to stop assualting people in nightclubs ;)
Much love…
7-5.
25 McRib // Apr 15, 2009 at 4:56 pm
“Yeah, i guess all those top 6 finishes in the 5-10 years prior to Abramovich arriving at Chelsea were all imaginary? We really hadn’t established ourselves as a liable threat then had we?”
So finishing in the top six makes you a contender does it? Nonsense. Are Everton and Aston Villa title contenders this year? No.
Damien -
“and yet you still havent won a league.”
Last time I checked we’ve won 18 of them!
Much love…
1-0
2-0
over all games this season…
8-7 :)
26 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 17, 2009 at 12:31 pm
McRib:
“So finishing in the top six makes you a contender does it? Nonsense. Are Everton and Aston Villa title contenders this year? No.”
Again McRib, my point was that we were in that position before being able to match Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the spending stakes, when we could we immediately won back to back premier league titles, have Liverpool?
Good effort mate, but clipping quotes to your advantage aint gonna help you.
27 lol come on // Apr 17, 2009 at 2:44 pm
the point is chelsea fans you havent won the champions league end of
28 lol come on // Apr 17, 2009 at 2:46 pm
so whats your answer to that one history or no history liverpool have won it 5 times
29 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 17, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Lol come on, if you had bothered to read the debate so far, the argument was that history is no reflection of current events.
No, Chelsea haven’t won the champions league, a trophy that realistically should be reserved for the champions of the various leagues, which reminds me, how many premierships have you won?
Regardless though, as i say if we all allowed history to dictate our lives then we’d all be worried about Celtic, Aston Villa, Leeds, Notts Forest and the list goes on and on and on.
History is an account of what has happened in the past, live for the now mate, go back to focusing on the league i WANT liverpool to win it, i don’t believe we can catch both Liverpool and United now and believe me, i’d rather Liverpool win it than United.
30 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 17, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Also, am i the only one to have noticed that the Einstein Liverpool fan in the photo at the top of this article spelt CHELSEA as “chlsea”? Lmao, ah scousers, how we love you for all the wrong reasons…
31 Liverpool Fan // Apr 18, 2009 at 10:44 am
I admit we scousers like in our own bubble.
We constantly lie to ourselves that we’re good, because football is all we have.
But, you can’t deny, that we were the better team over the two legs, and deserved to win.
Despite, getting wasted in Anfield, where our famous “atmosphere” sounded something like “gerrard whats the score” and “chelsea chelsea”
Despite us deserving to lose, not 3-1 but 6-1 in Anfield.
Despite a Cech blunder and a deflected shot at the Bridge.
Despite Rafa giving up when he took off Torres.
Despite Hiddink’s genius when we were pinned back as soon as Anelka came on.
We still believe! In something!
And that is..
..our history
I can’t remember if we do, but someone said that I should care so I do.
And therefore, I have the RIGHT to act arrogant.
32 ChelseaBlueIsTheColour // Apr 18, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Lmao @ Liverpool Fan, just about sums it up champ, well said. ;-)
