Most recognisable sportsman on the planet fails to produce ID

Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl releases a book called The Beckham Experiment: How the World’s Most Famous Athlete Tried to Conquer America in July.

In between accounts of his frosty relationship with Landon Donovan and former LA Galaxy president Alexi Lalas and analysis of his free kick technique, Wahl reveals details of an embarrassing alcohol-related incident.

While dining in a country that will happily give guns and mortgages to people who don’t know how to use them, the world famous 33-year-old was challenged when he asked to have a glass of wine with his meal. Unable to produce proof of age for the jobsworth waiter, and unable to understand why someone wouldn’t recognise his beautiful face, Beckham was forced to listen to his wife’s inane banter without the aid of alcohol for the entire evening.
