Cheesy opera singer prepares fans for dull goalless draw

We’ve been trying to find a video of Newcastle Utd’s rousing pre-match song since we witnessed it last night, and as usual, 101GG have come up with the audio/visual goods.

Prior to Alan Shearer’s most recent disappointing outing as Newcastle boss, the club flew opera singer Graeme Danby to St James’ Park, to lead a rendition of Geordie favourite “The Blaydon Races”. Decked out in a Newcastle shirt with ‘Top Chanter’ emblazoned on the back, Danby walked around the pitch waving a flag, while Newcastle fans sung along and viewers at home scratched their heads at the cheesefest unfolding before them.

Things get particularly cringeworthy, when he blasts into a chorus of “There’s only one Alan Shearer”. Is it just us, or is there a noticeable drop in audience participation when singer asks fans to show support for their latest Messiah?

Spoiler bonus:
Danby also did his flag waving routine before last year’s Tyne-Wear derby. On that day, Newcastle were much more fortunate, coming out 2-0 victors.

Dammit…! I was hoping this would somehow come unnoticed, despite being, er, televised across the globe… Still, it took until 14:00 before any mention of it popped up on my iGoogle / favourite sites.

Just goes to show how many people actually took an interest in the match outside of pompey and my fellow magpie fans.

This guy has been singing at the matches all season, started off as a gimmick against Blunderland last season that went down quite well, so they decided they would keep it for all this season.
I’m amazed it hasn’t come to light earlier, i think everyone was hoping no-one would notice.

i assumed shearer paid him to get a ‘one alan shearer’ chant going, gave him a mike and a spotlight, and still no-one joined in. i like alan shearer but he doesnt know enough about football nor have a psychotic volcano inside him that will allow him to become a top manager.

you can hear from the last 1/8th of this clip the commentator says “Alan Shearer was most insistent before kick off that he would open the dressing room door and insist that his players listen to what was going on outside”. Well it might have inspired Alan but it did nothing for his team did it? He always was a selfish twat I suppose.
