The latest transfer news, gossip and damned lies
Robinho to Barcelona
The Brazilian forward has responded to speculation that the treble winners could be interested in signing him by telling Spanish newspaper Sport: “Barcelona are a great team and everybody would love to play for them.”
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: Financially, there is no pressure on Manchester City to sell so Robinho is only likely to leave if Mark Hughes feels he can get someone better in.
Heurelho Gomes to PSV
In 90% of Spurs’ games last season, Gomes was one of Spurs’ best players and a vital part of the best home defence in the Premier League. However, The Mirror only remember the mistakes and expect him to be offloaded to fund a move for the unflappable and thoroughly reliable, umm, Paul Robinson.
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: The January moves for Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Pascal Chimbonda appear to have convinced the press that Harry Redknapp is trying to reassemble Tottenham’s Carling Cup winning team. Gomes has weathered a storm of negative publicity and has the potential to be brilliant so selling him now that he has settled would be a huge mistake.
Matthew Upson to Liverpool
The Sun ran a quote from Matthew Upson yesterday stating that he was enjoying life at West Ham and would stay providing they show ambition. However, they’ve changed their mind today and claim he is selling his house in preparation of a move to Liverpool.
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: In many ways it’s the perfect time to sell: Upson’s market value will never be higher, there’s enough interest to get a bidding war going, James Tomkins has been a revelation and Danny Gabbidon is on the mend. However, the Hammers need to lose their image as a club who always sell their stars and Upson is expected to succeed Lucas Neill as captain.
