Stats boffins give Madrid something else to boast about

Cristiano Ronaldo admires some trophies he didn’t earn

Lord only knows why it took them nine years to compile it, but today the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) released their list of the top 200 European clubs of the twentieth century.

By awarding a varying scale of points for victories and draws in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and all other European competitions that operated from 1901-2000, the winners were determined to be Real Madrid. They finished ahead of second-placed Juventus by nearly one hundred points, while the most successful English team were Liverpool down in eighth place.

Here’s the top twenty, according to the IFFHS:

1. Real Madrid
2. Juventus
3. FC Barcelona
4. AC Milan
5. Bayern Munich
6. Inter Milan
7. Ajax
8. Liverpool
9. Benfica
10. Anderlecht
11. Manchester United
12. Atlético Madrid
13. Ferencvárosi TC
14. Leeds United
15. Sparta Praha
16. Dinamo Kyiv
17. AS Roma
18. Hamburger SV
19. VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach
20. Tottenham Hotspur

For the full 200 and an explanation of the points system, visit the IHFFS website. It’s interesting to see that Tottenham are eleven places ahead of their north London rivals Arsenal, while Premiership newbies Wolves and Burnley put in appearances at the lower end of the list.

Ferencvarosi was a better side, throughout the century, than Roma, Spurs and Celtic. Really. So … one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup buys you top twenty of the century, eh? Horrible statistics work from IFFHS. The fact that every win has equal weight, whether it’s a preliminary round or the Champions League final, makes this meaningless. Might as well just make a list of number of wins in club history.
