Best player in the world… for about a fortnight

World Cups can have a strange effect on players, just ask the slightly softer-around-the-middle of the two Ronaldos. He had a really weird one once. Followed by a brilliant one.

Anyway, in the run up to the next outing, The Spoiler will occasionally be pausing to allow a small doff of the cap to the players who have truly risen to the occasion, often never to be seen nor heard of again.

Kicking things off is Toto Schillaci, the man who made his debut for Italy at the 1990 World Cup, then went on to score decisive goals against Austria, Uruguay and Ireland, before Italy finally went out on penalties in their semi-final against Argentina.

He scored in that match too, as he did against Czechoslovakia, and against England in the third place play-off - won by Italy, for those who don’t dare to remember - leaving him with six goals in the competition, and the proud owner of a particularly shiny golden slipper.

Rather ridiculously, he went on to score just one more goal for Italy, before pretty much disappearing off the radar.
