David Silva - really?

David Silva

Like an absent father attempting to win back his tearful children with toys, cowboy outfits, and Chicken McNuggets, Real Madrid look set to spend another summer throwing ridiculous money around, in a bid to buy back their supporter’s affections.

But who should they get?

The popular Spanish website, Marca.com, has boiled the options down to a shortlist of six football superstars, with the readers voting for who they’d like to see battling for a spot on the team alongside Ronaldo and Kaka. Interestingly, there don’t appear to be any defenders.

The six players are: Cesc Fabregas, David Villa, Wayne Rooney, David Silva, Jesus Navas, and Franck Ribery.

At the time of writing, it seems that David Silva would be the prefered addition, closely followed by Cesc and Wazza. Ribery is toasting the fewest Spanish onions right now.

According to another Spanish daily, Sport, a big swoop is already being planned for Rooney, in a move that would make at least some sense, being that Benzema hasn’t quite cut the mustard, and Higuain is reportedly unpopular with the boardroom.

But is this all just crazy talk? Surely Real Madrid need to work with the talent that they have, and, if anything, bolster the defence?

Who do YOU think that they should spend their millions on? Let us know with a comment.

The only place that they need to see new faces is in the boardroom.

This extended experiment in letting the lunatics run the asylum has been very entertaining, but it’s not exactly dragging in the trophies with a net, is it?

jesus navas? the same jesus navas who juande ramos was going to buy when he was in charge of tottenham, but then found out suffers from bouts of homesickness?

well, i suppose madrid is only 300 miles away from his hometown.

The only real position of need is a left-back. Currently, Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo are splitting duties at that position. Marcelo lacks the necessary defensive attributes and Arbeloa is serviceable but being played out of position. Good LBs are hard to come by, the only other need is for a wide player and most of the fan base favor Navas (who has gotten over his homesickness and managed to travel all the way to Moscow with Sevilla and Paris with the National Team).

What this team really needs is time to come together. No manager would be able to put together a team in six months. Real Madrid has all the tools it needs to once again become a force in Europe

Well, the players Real need are not actually Villa or Silva or Ribery. They need players like Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic. They need a solid back four. Why not go for Maicon and get rid of Arbeloa and Sergio Ramos? Ramos is not good defensively. He’s a RWB and basically is always on the attack. Bring in big centre-halves, like Hangeland or Dunne, who are a real threat from set-pieces too and have proven themselves defensively. Until they don’t get a solid back four who have the ability to keep successive clean sheets, Real Madrid can never win the CL or the League. No matter how many high profile names they bring in, be it Rooney or Villa or dare I say, Lionel Messi, they can never score enough goals until they don’t feel comfortable where it matters, yes, at the back!
Benzema is a classy player! How many strikers in the world have we actually seen who are play makers and clinical finishers? Not many! Benzema is one of them! Play him regularly and he is bound to get you 20+ goals every season!

Again, another trite article lamenting poor Real’s lack of success and suggesting they continue to try and buy said success. They will NEVER achieve their goal of a CL and Liga domination with their dual policy of buying superstars and benching/ignoring or dissing former first team players. They treat ronaldo,Kaka,Raul, Casillas and Ramos with dignity and respect but disdain Higuain (to my mind far more worthwhile than Kaka) while paying out hugh salaries and endebting Real all to the delight and encouragement of EUFA and FFA, as well as LaLiga. Darren is spot on…they need a boardroom change, swapping the populist and dissolute Ramez with sound financial management and youth oriented policies (like Wenger at Arsenal) combined with stability and leadership (like SAF at ManU). this is against current Real “culture”and not a common approach in Spain (other than Barca). I doubt whether they can beat Barca to the Liga crown this year and if they don’t the revolving door at the Bernabau will begin to spin again as Alonso, Higuain, Benzema,Arbeaola, possibly Ramos, probably Kaka and certainly Pellegrinni are booted out for the next round of cannon fooder to Rámez’s ambitions.

I prefer to defer passing judgement now since this is just the first year that they made changes in their player line up. However, I have to congratulate you for demanding immediate accountability and changes from the Real Madrid’s management. If many more made the same demands, I’m sure that would put them on their toes. Executives here give themselves billions of dollars in compensation and bonuses despite failures in their corporations. I wonder how people would react if that happens there.

    Genghis,
This accountability is like pissing into the wind with these guys…they don’t care what we think, it is all about Ramez’s ego and ambitions to buy a trophy AT ANY COST. What are these costs? Here is a shortlist:

    1) Ruining Real by estabilizing the team each year,
    2) Degrading LaLiga by outbuying other teams who try but can’t keep up (other than Barca),
    3) Destroying or derailing former first team players who are now riding the bench permanently,
    4) Dropping new managers in and out at a frightening pace, even beyond the EPL’s lightning annual managerial dismissals,
    5) Making LaLiga the object of worldwide mockery and
    6) Arrogantly and blatantly disrespecting, dishonouring and damaging EUFA and FIFA’s attempts to promote equitable and financially sound football management europe wide and Worldwide!

Why do you think that we should give them a chance? This is not the first time Ramez and his sidekicks have tried to buy their way to success and failed miseraby. What a shame and a disgrace Real have turned out to be. I say GET A NEW BOARD, including a new General Director and get someone in who will build NOT just buy a team.
