The Spoiler

The top six underwhelming England strikers

The hitmen who didn’t quite cut it at international level

Chris Sutton

In light of in-form Sunderland striker Darren Bent’s omission from Don Fabio’s latest England squad, Spoiler correspondent Alex Perry has compiled a list of English strikers who failed to sparkle on the international stage. Who knows, Darren, if you keep “banging them in” you may get a chance to avoid joining this list…

Chris Sutton
410 club appearances / 88 goals
1 England appearance / 0 goals

Alan Shearer’s other half in Blackburn Rovers’ deadly strike force, Sutton was the joint top-scorer with Dion Dublin and 18-year-old Michael Owen in the 1997/98 season, and thus a shoo-in for the upcoming World Cup squad, surely? Well, no, because Sutton had decided a few months before that playing for an experimental England ‘B’ team wasn’t for him and Glenn Hoddle decided Sutton’s single goalless cap in an England shirt was enough.

Robbie Fowler
409 club appearances / 172 goals (and counting)
26 England appearances / 8 goals

You couldn’t pick up a newspaper in the nineties without reading about “England’s most natural finisher”, scoring 30-plus goals three seasons on the bounce. Fowler went to Euro ‘96 in the form of his life, but he was never going to unsettle the Shearer/Sheringham partnership that did so well in that tournament.

Persistent injuries, the “Spice Boy” lifestyle and controversial goal celebrations meant Fowler was restricted to just 26 England appearances and just one competitive goal - against Albania in a World Cup qualifier.

Matthew Le Tissier
443 club appearances / 162 goals
8 England appearances / 0 goals

A goal in every two-and-a-half games is an unbelievable return

Manchester Utd legend backs Mourinho as next Reds boss

We say ‘legend’, we mean Andy Cole

Andy Cole

Jose Mourinho
has vehemently denied saying that he wishes to replace Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, despite being quoted to the contrary at the weekend. Such comments would be disrespectful, claim the Portuguese manager who failed to shake hands with his Manchester counterpart at their last encounter.

Rio Ferdinand has already expressed his approval of Mourinho, and now ex-United striker Andy (sorry, ‘Andrew’) Cole has backed the Inter gaffer in an interview with the Manchester Evening News:

“The guy has got so much charisma - the Premier League misses him.

“He has got so much about him. When he talks everyone wants to listen. Regardless what it is, everyone sits up.

“Jose has the credentials. He knows how to bring the best out of his players like the current manager. It would be fantastic if he got the job here.”

Spoiler bonus: You’ve probably listened to it today already, but here’s Andrew Cole’s incredible rapping debut…

Chelsea transfer news: Adebayor in, Shevchenko out

All the latest transfer rumours, gossip and damn lies

Andriy Shevchenko

The mire of spurious summer transfers has thrown up an interesting player/ club combination today: according to the rumour vine, Andriy Shevchenko could be on his way to warming Barcelona’s bench in the near future. To compensate for selling approximately 57 attacking players this summer, Barca want to bring the Ukrainian in on a season-long loan, which means they pay no transfer fee but Chelsea get him off the wage bill. With the Milan option fading, he may just have to take this one.

Emmanuel Adebayor to Chelsea
New stories every day tell us the same stuff about Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Drogba, so it’s nice to see the press get more inventive. Chelsea want shot of Drogba and it seems they view Adebayor as the perfect replacement.

The Spoiler Truth-o-meter: Surely he won’t do an Ashley Cole

Robbie Keane to Liverpool
Could a (reasonably) big club have finally realised Robbie Keane is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and that despite Berbatov’s moments of brilliance, Keane works harder and is more consistent?

The Spoiler Truth-o-meter: May want to stick around at Spurs this season

Gareth Barry to Liverpool
One transfer saga that definitely looks
